TL;DR: In this article, a content processing system queues content items, such as user-generated blogs, tweets, social networking status updates and other postings, received from a variety of sources, and performs page layout of content items.
Abstract: Page layout of content items from a variety of sources is performed. A content processing system queues content items, such as user-generated blogs, tweets, social networking status updates and other postings, received from a variety of sources. Each content item comprises one or more assets from one or more asset types. The asset types include text, images, and video. A page builder retrieves items from the queue and determines the item's size constraints. A template is selected from a template database to use as a layout for the items on a page; each template has a number of slots into which content can be placed. A layout module lays out the items into the slots of the selected template based on the respective size and aspect ratio constraints of the items, in order to build a page to serve a client device.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for concurrent design of machines layout and AGV guide paths for a tandem system with single-load vehicles is proposed, which can achieve the following objectives: (1) maximise the workload balance between loops; (2) minimise the inter-loop flow; and (3) minimize the total flow distance.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a method for design of tandem automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems with single-load vehicles. We consider the concurrent design of machines layout and AGV guide paths for a tandem system. Our goal is to devise a method that can achieve the following objectives: (1) maximise the workload balance between loops; (2) minimise the inter-loop flow; and (3) minimise the total flow distance. Our method solves the problem in four stages, considering the machines layout and the tandem paths at the same time. It assigns machines to loops, determines the layout of each loop, arranges loops on the floor, and finally designs a transportation centre to link the loops. We compare the performance of our method with a sequential design method that first determines the layout and then assigns the machines to loops. We solve a number of randomly generated problems for both methods. Results indicate that the proposed algorithm performs faster and achieves lower values of inter-loop flows and inter-...

TL;DR: A heuristic to determine a common linear machine sequence for multiple products with different operation sequences and a limited number of duplicate machine types available for the job indicates that the proposed method can be an effective tool in solving layout design problems.
Abstract: This paper presents a simple heuristic to determine a common linear machine sequence for multiple products with different operation sequences and a limited number of duplicate machine types available for the job. The heuristic is based on minimisation of the total flow distance travelled by a product on the linear machine sequence. It is assumed that the flows of products are allowed only in the forward direction, either in-sequence or by-pass. It is also assumed that backtrack movements are not allowed. The effectiveness of the proposed heuristic is demonstrated through the solutions of two typical layout design problems taken from the literature. Subsequently, a number of additional problems are solved and their results are compared with the results applying existing methods. The results indicate that the proposed method can be an effective tool in solving layout design problems.

TL;DR: The research project presented in this paper deals with the development of a creative evolutionary design methodology for layout problems in architecture and urban planning and examines different approaches to achieving the best possible general applicability.
Abstract: The research project presented in this paper deals with the development of a creative evolutionary design methodology for layout problems in architecture and urban planning. To date many optimisation techniques for layout problems have already been developed. The first attempts to automate layout were undertaken back in the early 1960s. Since then, these ideas have been taken forward in various different manifestations, for example shape grammars, CBS, cellular automata and evolutionary approaches. These projects, however, are mostly restricted to very specific fields or neglect the creative, designerly component. Since pure optimisation methods are of little practical use for design purposes, there have been no useful attempts to derive a universally applicable method for computer aided layout design. For this we need to be aware that designing is a process that occurs at different levels and degrees of abstraction. The solution space is explored in the realm between intuition and rationality in a variety of ways. Good solutions can only arise through an intensive and fluid dialogue between the designer and the generating system. The goal of our project is to develop an adaptive design system for layout problems. To this end we examine different approaches to achieving the best possible general applicability of such a system and discuss criteria that are crucial for the development of such systems.

TL;DR: A novel integer non-linear programming model for the layout design of dynamic cellular manufacturing systems (DCMS) under an uncertain environment is presented and to some extent overcomes common disadvantages in the existing dynamic cell formation models.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel integer non-linear programming model for the layout design of dynamic cellular manufacturing systems (DCMS) under an uncertain environment. A novel aspect of this model is concurrently making the interrelated cell formation and intracell layout decisions in a dynamic and uncertain environment. Other compromising aspects are: considering single-row layout of equal area facilities to locate machines in each cell, machine relocation based on locations assigned to a machine during two successive periods, calculation of material handling cost based on the distance between the locations assigned to machines, and presenting the existence of uncertainty in the model parameters by fuzzy numbers. Such an integrated model with an extensive coverage of important manufacturing features has not been proposed before and incorporates several design features including intracell layout, operation sequence, operation time, alternative process routing, duplicate machines, machine capacity...

TL;DR: In this paper, a mass-spring physical model-based shape morphing method is proposed and implemented to fit a component of sufficient size in a limited space while optimizing the overall performance objectives of the vehicle and improving design efficiency.
Abstract: Engineering research into packing problems has been widely undertaken in recent years. The use of component shape morphing in layout design has, however, received little attention. Shape morphing is required for fitting a component of sufficient size in a limited space while optimizing the overall performance objectives of the vehicle and improving design efficiency. To morph components that can have arbitrary shapes in layout design, a mass-spring physical model-based morphing method is proposed and implemented. Vehicle layout design with shape morphing is a multi-objective, multilevel problem with a large number of design variables. To solve this large scale problem, decomposition is adopted. At the system level, the overall performance objectives are optimized with respect to locations and orientations of components. At the component level, deformable objects are morphed to fit in the available space. A vehicle underhood layout design problem is demonstrated to illustrate the proposed approach.

TL;DR: In this article, the problem of discontinuous work flow in pulley plant resulting from the plant layout was investigated and the problem in terms of material flow of each operation section was indentified.
Abstract: This research aims to improve the plant layout of pulley's factory to eliminate obstructions in material flow and thus obtain maximum productivity. The present plant layout and the operation process of each section (i.e. sand mold, core ware house, core making, disassembly surface finishing, furnace, and inspection sections) have been investigated. The problem in term of material flow of each operation section was indentified. The result showed that disassembly surface finishing and inspection sections should be allocated to make the good material flow. The suitable of new plant layout can decrease the distance of material flow, which rises production. plant layout design for denture manufacturing. The suitable 4 plant layout models were designed and compared the efficiency of each plant by adjacency-based scoring. Moreover, line balancing was done to allocate human resource by using simulation programming (Arena 10) to find the increasing productivity of the new improvement layout. These thus reflect the importance of the plant layout design to bring about an increase in productivities. Yet, plat layout design is complicated due to many related factors such as employees, workflow, machine positions, and the relationship between machines and work. These factors result in plant layout improvement planning. Moreover, investment is required for machine positioning. Hence, the primary step for plant layout improvement should be started with indentifying the problems of the current plant layout in order to maximize the productivities at the minimized investment. This research therefore aims to find out the causes of discontinuous work flow in pulley plant resulting from the plant layout. The researchers of this research have studied on the problems occurred to improve the plant layout and minimized the budget for the improvement.

TL;DR: In this article, a case study of an Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) plant is presented, where cellular manufacturing layout design based on Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and selection of facilities layout design by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) are applied to a case-study of an EMS plant.
Abstract: In this research, cellular manufacturing layout design based on Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and selection of facilities layout design by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) are applied to a case study of an Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) plant. Currently layout of this manufacturing plant is a process layout, which is not suitable due to the nature of an EMS that has high-volume and high- variety environment. Moreover, quick response and high flexibility are also needed. Then, cellular manufacturing layout design was determined for the selected group of products. SLP was used to analyzed and designed possible cellular layouts for the factory. In order to evaluate the best alternative layout, criteria for plant selection were determined. These performance measures were weighted by AHP. Then, the best cellular layout design was selected. This case study has shown the practical guideline for design and selection of the best EMS layout.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors conduct a comprehensive literature review in the field of FMLD and find that the evolutionary design approach using genetic algorithms reveals a new opportunity to automate and optimise such complex FMCRLD with an explorative and generative design process embodied in a stochastic evolutionary search.
Abstract: Family mould layout design (FMLD) is demanding and experience-dependent. It involves many sub-design tasks that determine the cost and performance of a family mould in the early conceptual mould layout design phase. This paper conducts a comprehensive literature review in the field of FMLD. The review ascertains that family mould cavity and runner layout design (FMCRLD) automation and optimisation is the critical knowledge gap in FMLD, and it should be viewed as a complex combinatorial layout design optimisation problem. The second part of this paper extends the review of the literature regarding possible computational techniques for supporting FMCRLD automation and optimisation. The review discovers that the evolutionary design approach using genetic algorithms reveals a new opportunity to automate and optimise such complex FMCRLD with an explorative and generative design process embodied in a stochastic evolutionary search. However, implementation of this innovative approach is full of challenges. Further research on this topic is urgently needed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a concept development process (CDP) is proposed and demonstrated as a framework to solve a value stream mapping (VSM) related process layout design optimization problem.
Abstract: Purpose: We propose and demonstrate a concept development process (CDP) as a framework to solve a value stream mapping (VSM) related process layout design optimization problem. Design/methodology/approach: A case study approach was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of CDP framework in a portable fire extinguisher manufacturing company. To facilitate the CDP application, we proposed the system coupling level index (SCLI) and simulation to evaluate the process layout design concepts. Findings: As part of the CDP framework application, three process layout design concepts - current layout (CL), express lane layout (ELL) and independent zone layout (IZL) - were generated. Then, the SCLI excluded CL and simulation selected IZL as the best concept. The simulation was also applied to optimize the performance of IZL in terms of the number of pallets. Based on this case study, we concluded that CDP framework worked well. Research limitations/implications: The process layout design optimization issue has not been well addressed in the VSM literature. We believe that this paper initiated the relevant discussion by showing the feasibility of CDP as a framework in this issue. Practical implications: The CDP and SCLI are very practice-oriented approaches in the sense that they do not require any complex analytical knowledge. Originality/value: We discussed a not well-addressed issue with a systematic framework. In addition, the SCLI presented was also unique.

Abstract: Layout design and planning is becoming critical due to shorter product life cycles and highly dynamic demand conditions. In this context, cellular layouts are proposed over traditional layouts like product and functional layouts. But cellular layouts need a complete relocation of resources, which consume time and money. This paper studies the relative performance of virtual cellular layout, functional layout and cellular layout of an automotive component manufacturing industry. A simulation model representing the industry is built in WITNESS 2006 to study the layouts. The results indicate that the performance of virtual cellular layout is relatively superior to that of functional layout and marginally inferior to cellular layout in terms of cost and other performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparative study of different layout designs with respect to different levels of model and head count variability is presented, and the results show that the effect of headcount variability and model variability do create an impact towards the performance of flow line, job shop and cellular layout.
Abstract: This paper presents a comparative study that uses simulation to investigate the performance of different layout designs with respect to different levels of model and head count variability. There are three types of layout designs being examined in this paper: flow line, job shop and cellular layout. These three layouts are evaluated based on three selected performance measures which are throughput time, lateness and labour productivity. These three performance measures are selected because they relate with the overall layout productivity. The simulation model is build by using the WITNESS simulation package and the simulation results are tested in the F-test and Newman-Keuls test. In this study, the radio-cassette player production system has been used as an empirical study. The results show that the effect of headcount variability and model variability do create an impact towards the performance of flow line, job shop and cellular layout.
