TL;DR: A novel data-driven approach where nonlinear regressors are trained to capture the relationship between the agent-based metrics, and the geometrical and topological features of a layout is proposed, which can synthesize crowd-aware layouts and improve existing layouts with better crowd flow properties.
Abstract: We propose a novel approach for designing mid-scale layouts by optimizing with respect to human crowd properties. Given an input layout domain such as the boundary of a shopping mall, our approach synthesizes the paths and sites by optimizing three metrics that measure crowd flow properties: mobility, accessibility, and coziness. While these metrics are straightforward to evaluate by a full agent-based crowd simulation, optimizing a layout usually requires hundreds of evaluations, which would require a long time to compute even using the latest crowd simulation techniques. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel data-driven approach where nonlinear regressors are trained to capture the relationship between the agent-based metrics, and the geometrical and topological features of a layout. We demonstrate that by using the trained regressors, our approach can synthesize crowd-aware layouts and improve existing layouts with better crowd flow properties.

TL;DR: In this article, a case study of layout design using SLP is presented for a multina-tional company which manufactures a product with high variety, and four possible rearrangements of production departments are evaluated on basis of improved accessibility and material flow efficiency criteria.
Abstract: 1 Abstract: Implementation of lean manufacturing principles and believing in continu- ous improvement are the tools which help industries to sustain global competition. With the escalation in population, the demand for technology is increased more than ever. This leads to the steady increase in production rates of existing models and even introduction of new product models. These factors often results in "layout modification" of manufacturing industries. Plant layout improves resource utiliza- tion and provides means for application of lean tools such as 5S, seven wastes, kanban, Just In Time (JIT), etc. These tools not only contribute in reducing cost but also benefit the organization by improving product quality. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of different approaches used in layout design. The study also simplifies the application of systematic layout planning (SLP) in the development of new layout. SLP is a technique used for layout development and material flow improvement. A case study of layout design using SLP is presented for a multina- tional company which manufactures a product with high variety. The results include four possible rearrangements of production departments. These layout alternatives are evaluated on basis of improved accessibility and material flow efficiency criteria.

TL;DR: In this paper, a model for designing the layout of sewer networks considering their reliability is introduced and optimized using a simple simulated annealing scheme, where the best layout with the maximum reliability represents an optimum sewer layout in which clogging in a sewer has the least effect on its upstream lines.
Abstract: The sewer layout in flat areas significantly influences the final design which is desired to be optimized for the construction and operational costs. This study introduces a model for designing the layout of sewer networks considering their reliability. A reliability criterion is introduced and optimized using a simple simulated annealing scheme. The best layout with the maximum reliability represents an optimum sewer layout in which clogging in a sewer has the least effect on its upstream lines. A case study is solved using the proposed model. Then, for the obtained layout, the sewer specifications are designed using a dynamic programming model. The reliability somehow reflects the operational costs that can be taken into account in the system design by the proposed model. Furthermore, it is concluded that the network's reliability and construction cost are in conflict with each other such that more reliable layouts lead to more expensive designs.

Abstract: In order to consider the psychological cognitive characteristics affecting operating comfort and realize the automatic layout design, cognitive ergonomics and GA-ACA (genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm) were introduced into the layout design of human-machine interaction interface. First, from the perspective of cognitive psychology, according to the information processing process, the cognitive model of human-machine interaction interface was established. Then, the human cognitive characteristics were analyzed, and the layout principles of human-machine interaction interface were summarized as the constraints in layout design. Again, the expression form of fitness function, pheromone, and heuristic information for the layout optimization of cabin was studied. The layout design model of human-machine interaction interface was established based on GA-ACA. At last, a layout design system was developed based on this model. For validation, the human-machine interaction interface layout design of drilling rig control room was taken as an example, and the optimization result showed the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Although environmental performance-based methodologies are increasingly considered in the early design stages due to their potential for improving the final building performance, few studies have scrutinized the interoperation of floor-plan design and thermal zoning for the purpose of optimized building energy use and indoor comfort. The absence of effective tools, which aid designers incorporate an environmentally adapted thermal zoning into the space arrangement process, invokes the strong necessity for a new space layout design methodology based on optimal thermal zoning. Thus, this paper presents a highly practical decision support tool named EASL (Environmental Architecture Space Layout) optimizer to bridge the gap between thermal and spatial zoning within architectural workflows. In this software, performance evaluation using the whole building simulation tool (Ecotect) and zone-based layout creation techniques is integrated for the automated generation of an optimal geometry of space and envelope g...

Abstract: Fixture plays an important part in constraining excessive sheet metal part deformation at machining, assembly, and measuring stages during the whole manufacturing process. However, it is still a difficult and nontrivial task to design and optimize sheet metal fixture locating layout at present because there is always no direct and explicit expression describing sheet metal fixture locating layout and responding deformation. To that end, an RBF neural network prediction model is proposed in this paper to assist design and optimization of sheet metal fixture locating layout. The RBF neural network model is constructed by training data set selected by uniform sampling and finite element simulation analysis. Finally, a case study is conducted to verify the proposed method.

Abstract: This article deals with configuration design and layout optimization of a GEO communication satellite. Layout design optimization of satellite objects are performed based on two-stage algorithm. Finite Circle Method (FCM) is used to express geometric constraints mathematically, and provide a smooth design space. For mathematical expression of performance constraints such as electromagnetic and thermal requirements, the distance constraints between objects have been developed. Then a hybrid method is proposed to optimize layout design which is a combination of simulated annealing optimization and quasi-Newton methods. This approach provides global and deterministic optimal solutions. Developed hybrid method validation is performed on a sample test problem. Finally, the proposed algorithm has been implemented for configuration and optimal layout design of a communication satellite. The results show that considered constraints of communication satellite are satisfied.

Abstract: During the past few decades, developing efficient methods to solve dynamic facility layout problems has been focused on significantly by practitioners and researchers. More specifically meta-heuristic algorithms, especially genetic algorithm, have been proven to be increasingly helpful to generate sub-optimal solutions for large-scale dynamic facility layout problems. Nevertheless, the uncertainty of the manufacturing factors in addition to the scale of the layout problem calls for a mixed genetic algorithm–robust approach that could provide a single unlimited layout design. The present research aims to devise a customized permutation-based robust genetic algorithm in dynamic manufacturing environments that is expected to be generating a unique robust layout for all the manufacturing periods. The numerical outcomes of the proposed robust genetic algorithm indicate significant cost improvements compared to the conventional genetic algorithm methods and a selective number of other heuristic and meta-heurist...

TL;DR: In this paper, a new phenomenon of adjacency and closeness rating is proposed for constructing the optimal facility layout design, which considers both the degree of closeness as the economical purposes, and farness as the safety purposes concurrently.
Abstract: In this manuscript a new phenomenon of adjacency and closeness rating is proposed for constructing the optimal facility layout design. In the proposed approach, the closeness rating is applied to every pair of neighboring departments in a range of their attached point up to a predefined distance between them. Also, while in the traditional approach the closeness rating is applied for determining either the proximity or farness of two departments, the proposed approach considers both the degree of closeness as the economical purposes, and farness as the safety purposes concurrently. A mathematical model is proposed for constructing the optimal layout design. For evaluating the efficiency and flexibility of the proposed model, a computational experiment is conducted. Through the results of this experiment, three major novelties of the proposed model such as its flexibility for concurrent consideration of the economic and the safety aspects of the layout design, its ability for constructing varieties of the layout designs, and a better implementation of adjacency among the neighboring department's pairs during the designing processes are demonstrated.

TL;DR: Numerical results show that the WL-LS algorithm is an effective method for layout optimization of satellite modules and outperforms methods in the literature.
Abstract: The layout design of satellite modules is considered to be NP-hard. It is not only a complex coupled system design problem but also a special multi-objective optimization problem. The greatest challenge in solving this problem is that the function to be optimized is characterized by a multitude of local minima separated by high-energy barriers. The Wang-Landau (WL) sampling method, which is an improved Monte Carlo method, has been successfully applied to solve many optimization problems. In this paper we use the WL sampling method to optimize the layout of a satellite module. To accelerate the search for a global optimal layout, local search (LS) based on the gradient method is executed once the Monte-Carlo sweep produces a new layout. By combining the WL sampling algorithm, the LS method, and heuristic layout update strategies, a hybrid method called WL-LS is proposed to obtain a final layout scheme. Furthermore, to improve significantly the efficiency of the algorithm, we propose an accurate and fast computational method for the overlapping depth between two objects (such as two rectangular objects, two circular objects, or a rectangular object and a circular object) embedding each other. The rectangular objects are placed orthogonally. We test two instances using first 51 and then 53 objects. For both instances, the proposed WL-LS algorithm outperforms methods in the literature. Numerical results show that the WL-LS algorithm is an effective method for layout optimization of satellite modules.

TL;DR: A scribble-based interactive segmentation approach, where the user draws scribbles on the various regions and the system performs page layout segmentation, which is very fast, easy to use, robust to user interaction, and provides accurate results.
Abstract: This paper presents an interactive approach for fast and accurate page layout segmentation. It is a scribble-based interactive segmentation approach, where the user draws scribbles on the various regions and the system performs page layout segmentation. The user can correct and refine the resulting segmentation by drawing new scribbles. To classify the various regions of the page, we apply a bank of Gabor filters, in several orientations and multiple frequencies, to capture the orientation, the stroke width, and size of the text. These properties also implicitly encode the writing style of the document. After combining the responses of the Gabor filter into a feature matrix, we classify various regions of the document by applying graph cuts, while taking into account the user made scribbles. The presented approach is very fast, easy to use, robust to user interaction, and provides accurate results.

Abstract: Printed/Organic Electronics (PE) is an emerging technology with gargantuan market potential, particularly if its realization is low cost and the supply chain associated with its design is manageable/established. For the former, a Fully-Additive All-Air Low-Temperature process (vis-a-vis a Subtractive process) is desirable, while for the latter, a comprehensive Process Development Kit (PDK) for Electronic Design Automation tools is necessary. In this paper, we delineate, arguably the first-ever PDK for PE — this PDK is developed for our Fully-Additive All-Air Low-Temperature printing process with very-low process variations, and capable of complete circuit realizations on a myriad of substrates, including low-cost low-temperature flexible plastic films. Our proposed PDK embodies accurate modeling of the printed transistor and printed passive elements. With these models, comprehensive schematic simulations can be performed, including Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate the efficacy of our PDK, in part based on our measured process variations. The layout design rules for our Fully-Additive printing process to facilitate layout design — imperative for estimating the printing area and the printing cost — are also delineated herein.

Abstract: Although there exist numerous literatures on facility layout in manufacturing systems, studies on department layout in hospitals are relatively scarce. In this paper, we proposed a MOEA/D based approach for a hospital department layout problem, where three objectives are simultaneously optimized, namely patient flow cost, the closeness of departments and rearrangement cost. A constraint handling technology is introduced to deal with infeasible solutions. Experiments show that the proposed approach is able to get satisfactory Pareto solutions with lower patients' flow cost and the closeness compared to the original layout, and that the optimized layouts decrease the patients' move time, thereby improving quality of service.

Abstract: This work presents an evolutionary approach that enables the automatic design of modular residential homes in mass customized production. Given a set of modular placement rules for the design, the formal problem can be viewed as a two-dimensional single large object placement problem with fixed dimensions and additional positioning constraints. This formulation results in the search of a floor plan layout constrained by dimensional and positional restrictions over a combinatorial size search space. A genetic algorithm strategy for the automation of floor plan design was implemented and shown to deliver the required design solution layouts. The layouts, when embedded into a proper graphical interface system will allow for future owners to acquire houses fitting their exact needs at affordable prices, improving the quality of living while simultaneously complying with a language of design.

TL;DR: This paper presents a framework for a global-fit algorithm for page breaking based on the ideas of Knuth/Plass in such a way that it is directly usable without additional executables with any modern TeX installation and can serve as a test bed for future experiments and extensions in this space.
Abstract: Pagination problems deal with questions around transforming a source text stream into a formatted document by dividing it up into individual columns and pages, including adding auxiliary elements that have some relationship to the source stream data but may allow a certain amount of variation in placement (such as figures or footnotes).Traditionally the pagination problem has been approached by separating it into one of micro-typography (e.g., breaking text into paragraphs, also known as h&j) and one of macro-typography (e.g., taking a galley of already formatted paragraphs and breaking them into columns and pages) without much interaction between the two. While early solutions for both problem spaces used simple greedy algorithms, Knuth and Plass introduced in the '80s a global-fit algorithm for line breaking that optimizes the breaks across the whole paragraph [1]. This algorithm was implemented in TeX'82 [2] and has since kept its crown as the best available solution for this space. However, for macro-typography there has been no (successful) attempt to provide globally optimized page layout: all systems to date (including TeX) use greedy algorithms for pagination. Various problems in this area have been researched (e.g., [3,4,5,6]) and the literature documents some prototype development. But none of these prototypes have been made widely available to the research community or ever made it into a generally usable and publicly available system. This paper presents a framework for a global-fit algorithm for page breaking based on the ideas of Knuth/Plass. It is implemented in such a way that it is directly usable without additional executables with any modern TeX installation. It therefore can serve as a test bed for future experiments and extensions in this space. At the same time a cleaned-up version of the current prototype has the potential to become a production tool for the huge number of TeX users world-wide.The paper also discusses two already implemented extensions that increase the flexibility of the pagination process: the ability to automatically consider existing flexibility in paragraph length (by considering paragraph variations with different numbers of lines [7]) and the concept of running the columns on a double spread a line long or short. It concludes with a discussion of the overall approach, its inherent limitations and directions for future research.[1] D. E. Knuth and M. F. Plass. Breaking Paragraphs into Lines.
