10 Sep 2013TL;DR: A two level hierarchical page layout model that models aesthetic design choices using local (within article region) and global (page level) prior probability distributions is developed that can infer the best way to divide a page into layout regions and simultaneously optimize content fit within these regions.
Abstract: We present a method for the automated composition of personalized newspapers. Traditional newsprint composition is a laborious and expensive manual process. We develop a two level hierarchical page layout model that models aesthetic design choices using local (within article region) and global (page level) prior probability distributions. Given content to be composed, our model can infer the best way to divide a page into layout regions and simultaneously optimize content fit within these regions. We automate decisions on how to paginate articles, flow article text across pages, crop images, adjust whitespace etc. for the best overall newspaper compositions. We also show how content editing which is a very important task in the traditional news workflow can be incorporated in a semi-automated manner within our framework. Our model is a generalization of our prior work on probabilistic modeling of single-flow layouts to enable multiple article flows on a page, while still allowing one or more articles that may break on a page and continue on subsequent pages.

TL;DR: The findings from the study indicate that CBA aids in defining a robust set of design criteria, sub-criteria and attributes and facilitates a collaborative decision-making process and on the other hand, AHP provides a structured approach for eliciting individual participant judgments.
Abstract: Arriving at a consensus in design decisions is challenging owing to the presence of diverse and multidisciplinary stakeholders with multiple design objectives. The literature on AEC design decision making have reported Analytic Hierarchy Process and Choosing by Advantages as two commonly used multi-criteria decision-making techniques for evaluation of design alternatives. However, the existing literature has mainly focused on choosing between material or technology and the comparison of the two techniques to assess the suitability for their application to non-spatial aspects of AEC design problem. The current work seeks to investigate the suitability of CBA and AHP to a layout design problem. A decision-making exercise involving a hypothetical case of evaluation of three classroom layouts was conducted. A set of criteria for design evaluation which was derived based on a previous study on stakeholder design values was used in the exercise. Conclusions were drawn based on the operationalization of the two techniques rather than a direct comparison of the results obtained from the two techniques. The findings from the study indicate that CBA aids in defining a robust set of design criteria, sub-criteria and attributes and facilitates a collaborative decision-making process. On the other hand, AHP provides a structured approach for eliciting individual participant judgments. The benefits and limitations with respect to the operationalization of the two techniques are discussed in detail.

TL;DR: In this article, a quick page layout completing device consisting of a control obtaining unit for obtaining required controls before interface layout is performed, a layout type judgment unit for judging the control located on a current page in the obtained controls is associated with other controls or the relative position of the controller located on the current page to other controls.
Abstract: The invention provides a quick page layout completing device. The quick page layout completing device comprises a control obtaining unit for obtaining required controls before interface layout is performed, a layout type judgment unit for judging the control located on a current page in the obtained controls is associated with other controls or the relative position of the control located on the current page to other controls, a control layout unit for judging whether the current control is associated with the other controls based on the layout type judgment unit or not and conducting layout on the current page. The invention further provides a quick page layout completing method. By means of the technical scheme, the single-object type can be fully utilized to complete multi-object type page layout based on an existing page layout completion mode, and a universal and unified service thought of multi-object type involved page layout is established.

TL;DR: A prototype interactive page layout system is described in which textual and pictorial information can be manipulated under computer control on a scanned color display, suitable for designing both the individual advertisements and complete pages of directories or newspapers.
Abstract: A prototype interactive page layout system is described in which textual and pictorial information can be manipulated under computer control on a scanned color display. The system demonstrates the unique advantages of a scanned display for the showing of both text and illustrations, of details of different fonts, and of color. Text can be edited, positioned, and changed in size, font, and case; pictures can be positioned, shrunk, enlarged, and cropped. The color of both text and pictures can also be changed in order to guide the designer's eye to essential parts of the page. The system is suitable for designing both the individual advertisements and complete pages of directories or newspapers.

23 May 2005TL;DR: A new watermarking system for VLSI layout design intellectual property protection (IPP) that will not damage circuit properties by using a special incremental router that removes wires of target nets and re-routes them by inserting redundant bends.
Abstract: We propose a new watermarking system for VLSI layout design intellectual property protection (IPP) that will not damage circuit properties. The previous studies for layout design IPP are mainly restricted to pre-layout design, i.e. they would increase layout size and vary signal timing. The idea of our system is to use a special incremental router that removes wires of target nets and re-routes them by inserting redundant bends. We can distinguish the marked net from others. This redundant insertion is not always possible according to wire density around the wire, thus we use it iteratively. We evaluated the success possibilities of our watermarking system in various wire density benchmark circuits experimentally and found more than three iterations are enough for the practical post layout design to achieve successful watermarking.
