TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was applied to obtain a set of design schemes for engineers to choose from, and a non-nominated sorting method was adopted to obtain Pareto solutions.
Abstract: Improving of the quality of the disc cutters’ plane layout design of the full-face rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the most effective way to improve the global performance of a TBM. The plane layout design of disc cutters contains multiple complex engineering technical requirements and belongs to a multi-objective optimization problem with multiple nonlinear constraints. Based on analysis of the technical requirements of the plane layout problem, an optimizing mathematical model was built. To obtain a set of design schemes for engineers to choose from, a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was applied to carry out the optimization of the mathematical model. A constraint-domination principle was utilized to handle the constraints, and a nondominated sorting method was adopted to obtain Pareto solutions. Simulation results showed that the proposed method was efficient and accurate in obtaining the Pareto layout solutions.

TL;DR: A novel optimisation approach for the generation of diverse grid-based layouts using the mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model that ensures packing, alignment, grouping, and preferential positioning of elements.
Abstract: Grid layouts are used by designers to spatially organise user interfaces when sketching and wireframing. However, their design is largely time consuming manual work. This is challenging due to combinatorial explosion and complex objectives, such as alignment, balance, and expectations regarding positions. This paper proposes a novel optimisation approach for the generation of diverse grid-based layouts. Our mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model offers a rigorous yet efficient method for grid generation that ensures packing, alignment, grouping, and preferential positioning of elements. Further, we present techniques for interactive diversification, enhancement, and completion of grid layouts. These capabilities are demonstrated using GRIDS, a wireframing tool that provides designers with real-time layout suggestions. We report findings from a ratings study (N = 13) and a design study (N = 16), lending evidence for the benefit of computational grid generation during early stages of design.

TL;DR: An interactive, multimodal authoring tool that lets blind people understand spatial relationships between elements and modify layout templates and concludes with design considerations grounded in user feedback for improving the accessibility of spatially encoded information and developing tools for BVI authors.
Abstract: Spatial layout is a key component in graphic design. While people who are blind or visually impaired (BVI) can use screen readers or magnifiers to access digital content, these tools fail to fully communicate the content's graphic design information. Through semi-structured interviews and contextual inquiries, we identify the lack of this information and feedback as major challenges in understanding and editing layouts. Guided by these insights and a co-design process with a blind hobbyist web developer, we developed an interactive, multimodal authoring tool that lets blind people understand spatial relationships between elements and modify layout templates. Our tool automatically generates tactile print-outs of a web page's layout, which users overlay on top of a tablet that runs our self-voicing digital design tool. We conclude with design considerations grounded in user feedback for improving the accessibility of spatially encoded information and developing tools for BVI authors.

TL;DR: In this paper, a design engine may apply of design rules to the features described above to generate one or more solar collectors installation design alternatives, including generation of on-screen and/or paper representations of the physical layout or arrangement of the one or multiple design alternatives.
Abstract: Embodiments may include systems and methods to create and edit a representation of a worksite, to create various data objects, to classify such objects as various types of pre-defined “features” with attendant properties and layout constraints. As part of or in addition to classification, an embodiment may include systems and methods to create, associate, and edit intrinsic and extrinsic properties to these objects. A design engine may apply of design rules to the features described above to generate one or more solar collectors installation design alternatives, including generation of on-screen and/or paper representations of the physical layout or arrangement of the one or more design alternatives. Some embodiments may provide viewing, creating, and manipulating of multiple versions of a solar collector layout design for a particular installation worksite. The use of versions may allow analysis of alternative layouts, alternative feature classifications, and cost and performance data corresponding to alternative design choices. Version summary information providing a representative comparison between versions across a number of dimensions may be provided.

TL;DR: In this paper, the integration of unit load and material-handling considerations in a facility layout design is presented based on a stochastic model that captures the operational characteristics of the manufacturing system and a nonlinear mixed-integer program that incorporates a department formation and facility layout.
Abstract: The effectiveness of a layout design cannot be completely measured if the operational characteristics of the manufacturing system are ignored. There is, therefore, a need to develop integrated manufacturing system design models. In this paper, the integration of unit load and material-handling considerations in a facility layout design is presented. This integration is based on a stochastic model that captures the operational characteristics of the manufacturing system and a nonlinear mixed-integer program that incorporates a department formation and facility layout. The non-linear mixed-integer program is solved using a simulated annealing-based algorithm. Analytical results for different manufacturing system scenarios are presented and compared with results obtained using alternative QAP-type formulations. Based on our experiments and the characteristics of the different formulations, key observations are presented and discussed.
