TL;DR: An interchange algorithm is described, in which the fixture locators are generated sequentially first and are further improved, and the algorithm uses the D-optimality criterion to minimize the workpiece positioning error.
Abstract: This paper presents a new approach to the problem of fixture layout design for 3D workpieces. The approach is based on a concept of optimum experiment design, and the problem is treated as an optimal aggregation to select optimal locators from an initial collection of a large number of fixel locations on the surfaces of the given workpiece and to achieve form-closure for the part. An interchange algorithm is described, in which the fixture locators are generated sequentially first and are further improved. The algorithm uses the D-optimality criterion to minimize the workpiece positioning error. An example of turbine airfoil is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

TL;DR: The Layout Optimizer as discussed by the authors provides various real-time iterative constraint-satisfaction methodologies that use constraint-based frameworks to generate optimized layouts that map or embed virtual objects into environments.
Abstract: A “Layout Optimizer” provides various real-time iterative constraint-satisfaction methodologies that use constraint-based frameworks to generate optimized layouts that map or embed virtual objects into environments. The term environment refers to combinations of environmental characteristics, including, but not limited to, 2D or 3D scene geometry or layout, scene colors, patterns, and/or textures, scene illumination, scene heat sources, fixed or moving people, objects or fluids, etc., any of which may evolve or change over time. A set of parameters are specified or selected for each object. Further, the environmental characteristics are determined automatically or specified by users. Relationships between objects and/or the environment derived from constraints associated with objects and the environment are then used to iteratively determine optimized self-consistent and scene-consistent object layouts. This enables the Layout Optimizer to augment environments with arbitrary content in a structured constraint-based process that adapts to changing scenes or environments.

TL;DR: In this paper, a Java printer receives page layout requests and converts the requests into a rasterized image which is transferred to a recording medium for printing documents based on Java commands.
Abstract: A method and system for printing documents based on Java commands. A Java printer receives page layout requests and converts the requests into a rasterized image which is transferred to a recording medium. Page layout can be interactively modified. The Java printer also monitors print requests and is configurable using a World Wide Web interface.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system to automatically paginate web newspapers on the browser is presented, which uses a genetic algorithm with integer representation and variable mutation amplitude, fine-tuned by a greedy algorithm that proves to be much better than the genetic algorithm alone.
Abstract: The high volume of information available on the Internet makes it necessary to use search and organization tools to filter and display it. This presentation must make efficient use of the surface the browser leaves; this is even more true in the case of personalized newspapers, in which all the news and publicity must be presented in only one “coup d'oeil”, to make them as effective as possible. In this paper, a system to automatically paginate web newspapers on the browser is presented. The system uses a genetic algorithm with integer representation and variable mutation amplitude, fine-tuned by a greedy algorithm. This combination proves to be much better than the genetic algorithm alone. The algorithm is proved to be able to lay out the web page in real time, that is, a time insignificant with respect to the time it takes to load an average page. The system will be embedded in several personalized news sites that are being developed at Granada University.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of flow path characteristics on machine layouts were investigated and two heuristic search algorithms, one combining FLA-5 and a genetic algorithm and other combining FLa-6 and a GA algorithm, were proposed.
Abstract: In this paper the machine layout problem with a linear single-row flow path in automated manufacturing systems is investigated. Traditional machine layout approaches can produce an inappropriate layout design because they often do not consider flow path characteristics, such as flow path configuration and feasible flow path direction. This paper investigates the effects of such flow path characteristics on machine layouts. There are six flow-line analysis methods reported in the literature. Of these, the two best methods (FLA-5 for bidirectional flow lines and FLA-6 for unidirectional flow lines) are considered here. Two heuristic search algorithms, one combining FLA-5 and a genetic algorithm and other combining FLA-6 and a genetic algorithm, are proposed. A wide variety of data sets are used to test the proposed algorithms.
