Abstract: This paper deals with the warehouse layout optimization problem with respect to the distance reduction and the travel time minimization. The authors also searched for a flexible tool in order to optimize layout functionally to the fluctuations in demand and inventory level. The addressed optimization problem is a constrained optimization problem on an integer domain and it is shown to be NP-hard. The wide applicability of evolutionary computation and its good performances on a variety of different optimization problems have led to a strong interest in this type of algorithm. A heuristic genetic algorithm have been developed and a system for the effective assignment of the storage area to the different class of items is presented. The system is based on the association of a genetic algorithm and a deterministic simulation model. Computational experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. They were made by applying the proposed tool to a real industrial case concerning an Italian soft drinks company. As a result, the authors intend to provide a tool for warehouse layout and operations optimization that could be attractive for operation management researchers and realistically applicable by practitioners.

Abstract: This paper describes work that is being carried out as part of a collaborative research program between the British warshipbuilding company, Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd., and the Department of Naval Architecture at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. An optimal design procedure that utilizes the theory of fuzzy sets is used to achieve the general layout of space which allows the delineation of the main compartments of a vessel. Having defined the compartmental configuration of the functional spaces, the next level of design is concerned with a more detailed consideration of compartments, or groups of compartments and the equipment and systems they contain. Equipment is defined in terms of ergonomic envelopes, geometry and connectivity of services etc. The attributes of a 3-D graphics workstation are used, in conjunction with an equipment library, to provide an effective detailed design procedure. As illustrative examples of the method, the layout of the victual complex and dining areas for a small warship are generated.

Abstract: Web content extraction is concerned with the automatic identification of semantically interesting web page regions. To generalize to pages from unknown sites, it is crucial to exploit not only the local characteristics of a particular web page region, but also the rich interdependencies that exist between the regions and their latent semantics. We therefore propose a loopy conditional random field which combines semantic intra-page dependencies derived from both document structure and page layout, uses a realistic set of local and relational features and is efficiently learnt in the tree-based reparameterization framework. The results of our empirical analysis on a corpus of real-world news web pages from 177 distinct sites with multiple annotations on DOM node level demonstrate that our combination of document structure and layout-driven interdependencies leads to a significant error reduction on the semantically interesting regions of a web page.

Abstract: During the past few decades, developing efficient methods to solve dynamic facility layout problems has been focused on significantly by practitioners and researchers. More specifically meta-heuristic algorithms, especially genetic algorithm, have been proven to be increasingly helpful to generate sub-optimal solutions for large-scale dynamic facility layout problems. Nevertheless, the uncertainty of the manufacturing factors in addition to the scale of the layout problem calls for a mixed genetic algorithm–robust approach that could provide a single unlimited layout design. The present research aims to devise a customized permutation-based robust genetic algorithm in dynamic manufacturing environments that is expected to be generating a unique robust layout for all the manufacturing periods.
