TL;DR: In this article, a geometric reasoning model for automated fixture layout is presented, which imports geometric data of parts directly from a CAD system, reasons with geometric, tolerance and operation data, and automatically generates layout designs from the fixture component database provided.
Abstract: Fixture design has three design stages: conceptual, layout, and detail design. Geometric reasoning is one of the major tasks involved in layout design. This paper presents a geometric reasoning model for automated fixture layout. Desirable characteristics of layout design methodologies are first discussed. Computation models for cutting force effects, locator layout, clamp layout, and clamping forces are then presented in sequence. Finally, current implementation of a software system and results are described. The system imports geometric data of parts directly from a CAD system, reasons with geometric, tolerance and operation data, and automatically generates layout designs from the fixture component database provided.

TL;DR: In this article, a robust fixture layout is developed to minimize the sensitivity of product variation to fixture errors by selecting the appropriate coordinate locations of pins and slot orientations, which is the mathematical foundation of the optimal algorithm.
Abstract: The optimal fixture layout is crucial to product quality assurance in the multi-station sheet metal assembly processes. Poor fixture layout may lead to product variation during the assembly processes. In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimisation approach has been presented for the robust fixture layout design in the multi-station assembly processes. The robust fixture layout is developed to minimise the sensitivity of product variation to fixture errors by selecting the appropriate coordinate locations of pins and slot orientations. In this paper, a modified state space model for variation propagation in the multi-station sheet metal assembly is developed for the first time, which is the mathematical foundation of optimal algorithm. An e-optimal is applied as the robust design criteria. Based on the state space model and design criteria, a genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal fixture layout design. The proposed method can greatly reduce the sensitivity level of product variation. A ...

TL;DR: In this paper, a new phenomenon of adjacency and closeness rating is proposed for constructing the optimal facility layout design, which considers both the degree of closeness as the economical purposes, and farness as the safety purposes concurrently.
Abstract: In this manuscript a new phenomenon of adjacency and closeness rating is proposed for constructing the optimal facility layout design. In the proposed approach, the closeness rating is applied to every pair of neighboring departments in a range of their attached point up to a predefined distance between them. Also, while in the traditional approach the closeness rating is applied for determining either the proximity or farness of two departments, the proposed approach considers both the degree of closeness as the economical purposes, and farness as the safety purposes concurrently. A mathematical model is proposed for constructing the optimal layout design. For evaluating the efficiency and flexibility of the proposed model, a computational experiment is conducted. Through the results of this experiment, three major novelties of the proposed model such as its flexibility for concurrent consideration of the economic and the safety aspects of the layout design, its ability for constructing varieties of the layout designs, and a better implementation of adjacency among the neighboring department's pairs during the designing processes are demonstrated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mass-spring physical model-based shape morphing method is proposed and implemented to fit a component of sufficient size in a limited space while optimizing the overall performance objectives of the vehicle and improving design efficiency.
Abstract: Engineering research into packing problems has been widely undertaken in recent years. The use of component shape morphing in layout design has, however, received little attention. Shape morphing is required for fitting a component of sufficient size in a limited space while optimizing the overall performance objectives of the vehicle and improving design efficiency. To morph components that can have arbitrary shapes in layout design, a mass-spring physical model-based morphing method is proposed and implemented. Vehicle layout design with shape morphing is a multi-objective, multilevel problem with a large number of design variables. To solve this large scale problem, decomposition is adopted. At the system level, the overall performance objectives are optimized with respect to locations and orientations of components. At the component level, deformable objects are morphed to fit in the available space. A vehicle underhood layout design problem is demonstrated to illustrate the proposed approach.
