TL;DR: The experiment shows that formal layout modelling approaches can be effectively used real problems faced in industry, leading to significant improvements.
Abstract: This paper experiments application of different heuristic approaches to a real facility layout problem at a furniture manufacturing company. All the models are compared using AHP, where a number of parameters of interest are employed. The experiment shows that formal layout modelling approaches can be effectively used real problems faced in industry, leading to significant improvements.

TL;DR: In this paper, a migration section conducting process migration for converting first layout according to a first design standard into second layout based on a second design standard and a designated transistor size is presented.
Abstract: A migration section conducting process migration for converting first layout according to a first design standard into second layout according to a second design standard and a designated transistor size; an extraction section extracting transistor sizes and parasitic capacitances from the first and the second layout; a delay calculation section calculating first delay time from the transistor size and the parasitic capacitance extracted from the first layout and a driving current value of a transistor based on the first design standard, and calculating second delay time from the transistor size and the parasitic capacitance extracted from the second layout and a driving current value of the transistor based on the second design standard; and an optimum value calculation section calculating an optimum value of the transistor size after the process migration in order that the second delay time becomes equal to the first delay time, are provided

TL;DR: In this paper, a software tool is introduced which allows for a user to draw a ''stick figure'' of a desired MCPM layout which is transformed into a multi-objective optimization problem by the tool.
Abstract: Multi-Chip Power Modules (MCPMs) allow for integration of high power semiconductor devices and control circuitry into one compact package which yields improved reliability and reduced size, cost, and complexity. The layout design process of an MCPM is time consuming and very multidisciplinary, spanning thermal, electrical, and mechanical issues. A software tool is introduced in this paper which allows for a user to draw a `stick figure' of a desired MCPM layout which is transformed into a multi-objective optimization problem by the tool. After optimization, a user can browse a set of results which form a trade-off curve of approximately Pareto optimal thermal and electrical parasitic layout performance.

TL;DR: Numerical results show that the WL-LS algorithm is an effective method for layout optimization of satellite modules and outperforms methods in the literature.
Abstract: The layout design of satellite modules is considered to be NP-hard. It is not only a complex coupled system design problem but also a special multi-objective optimization problem. The greatest challenge in solving this problem is that the function to be optimized is characterized by a multitude of local minima separated by high-energy barriers. The Wang-Landau (WL) sampling method, which is an improved Monte Carlo method, has been successfully applied to solve many optimization problems. In this paper we use the WL sampling method to optimize the layout of a satellite module. To accelerate the search for a global optimal layout, local search (LS) based on the gradient method is executed once the Monte-Carlo sweep produces a new layout. By combining the WL sampling algorithm, the LS method, and heuristic layout update strategies, a hybrid method called WL-LS is proposed to obtain a final layout scheme. Furthermore, to improve significantly the efficiency of the algorithm, we propose an accurate and fast computational method for the overlapping depth between two objects (such as two rectangular objects, two circular objects, or a rectangular object and a circular object) embedding each other. The rectangular objects are placed orthogonally. We test two instances using first 51 and then 53 objects. For both instances, the proposed WL-LS algorithm outperforms methods in the literature. Numerical results show that the WL-LS algorithm is an effective method for layout optimization of satellite modules.

TL;DR: In this article, a case study of an Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) plant is presented, where cellular manufacturing layout design based on Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and selection of facilities layout design by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) are applied to a case-study of an EMS plant.
Abstract: In this research, cellular manufacturing layout design based on Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and selection of facilities layout design by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) are applied to a case study of an Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) plant. Currently layout of this manufacturing plant is a process layout, which is not suitable due to the nature of an EMS that has high-volume and high- variety environment. Moreover, quick response and high flexibility are also needed. Then, cellular manufacturing layout design was determined for the selected group of products. SLP was used to analyzed and designed possible cellular layouts for the factory. In order to evaluate the best alternative layout, criteria for plant selection were determined. These performance measures were weighted by AHP. Then, the best cellular layout design was selected. This case study has shown the practical guideline for design and selection of the best EMS layout.
