Recent Developments in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Ocular Toxoplasmosis.

Abstract: Ocular toxoplasmosis, a chorioretinal infection with Toxoplasma gondii, is the most common etiology of posterior uveitis in many countries. Accurate diagnosis depends heavily on the characteristic clinical features of this disease, but atypical presentations, especially in immunocompromised patients, may create diagnostic challenges and lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Molecular biology techniques to diagnose ocular toxoplasmosis have been available for many years and are now accessible as standard laboratory tests in many countries. Aqueous humor or vitreous evaluation to detect parasite DNA by polymerase chain reaction or specific antibody may provide definitive evidence for rapid diagnosis. Oral pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine plus systemic corticosteroids are an effective therapy for ocular toxoplasmosis. Recent data supports the use of other treatment approaches, including intravitreal antibiotics. The aim of the present review is to discuss briefly the new diagnostic tools and treatment options for ocular toxoplasmosis.

Ophthalmomyiasis Caused by Sheep Nasal Botfly (Oestrus ovis).

Abstract: Ophthalmomyiasis is a parasitic eye infection. Ayoung male went on a picnic with his family. After sudden blow of wind, he had a feeling of something struck in the eye, which quickly became swollen with severe itching and lacrimation. Atotal of 19 larvae in their instar stage were removed with fine forceps under topical anesthesia and slides were prepared for their identification, which came out to be Oestrus ovisbelonging to Oestridae family. Recently, cases are being reported from rural and urban areas of Sindh. Doctors in ER (Emergency Room) and ophthalmologists should be aware that whenever next time they see a patient with red eye conjunctivitis, ophthalmomyiasis should always be on their list of differentials.

Parasitic eye infection by Ascaris lumbricoides: Case report

Abstract: The parasitic infection is an affection of the body as well as the eye with parasites, protozoa's, worms and ectoparasites, with world incidence of 30%. These diseases are chronic, systemic diseases because of weak innate immunity and ability of parasites to evade immune answer of the host or increasing the resistance to the adaptive immunity of the host. Parasites can evade immunity of the host by: antigens variations, forming cysts, changing the hosts and by synthesis of some cytokines, which decrease immunity of the host. Ascaris lumbricoides is the largest intestinal nematode parasitizing man. The worm is known to cause subconjunctival mass, granulomatous iridocyclitis, choroiditis, recurrent vitreous hemorrhage, chronic dacryocystitis and invasion into the subretinal space. The goal of this case was to analyze the affection of the eye, caused by the Ascaris lumbricoides as very rare ocular pathology.
