TL;DR: In this paper, it has been demonstrated that adjustable speed drives, and, in general, power electronics waveforms, can harm insulation systems of rotating machines, causing significant reduction of reliability and life.
Abstract: It has been demonstrated already that adjustable speed drives, and, in general, power electronics waveforms, can harm insulation systems of rotating machines, causing significant reduction of reliability and life. Indeed, the type of supply voltage made by repetitive impulses alters significantly the electric field distribution in the turn-to-turn and phase-to-ground insulation, and also the machine terminal peak voltage can be increased significantly, with respect to the expected value at the inverter output [1]–[11].

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe three different methods that produce an unambiguous localization of partial discharge (PD) pulses produced at the cable ends, complementing the time-domain reflectometry (TDR).
Abstract: Partial discharge (PD) field tests are widely used for cable assessment or cable commissioning. Usually, these tests are carried out by means of off-line tests where PD pulses are measured with capacitively coupled PD sensors. In off-line single-sided cable measurements, time-domain reflectometry (TDR) is used to locate the source of the PD along the cable. However, when the PD pulses are originated at the cable ends, the TDR technique cannot, by itself, properly distinguish between PD pulses produced at the cable near-end or at the far-end. This paper describes three different methods that produce an unambiguous localization of PDs produced at the cable ends, complementing the TDR.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that with the present electrode arrangement, the process in the enclosed cavities is a streamer, which corresponds with Paschen's onset expression over a limited range.
Abstract: Fast partial discharge pulse data are compared with calculated results in a continuation of previous work that attempted to model the discharge phenomenon inside enclosed cylindrical cavities. It is shown that with the present electrode arrangement, the process in the enclosed cavities is a streamer. The classical capacitor model, the recent Pedersen model, and Paschen's law onset results are compared to the data. The preliminary thermal model is also considered. Pedersen's model gives results closer to experimental data then the simplistic capacitor model. The streamer model corresponds with Paschen's onset expression over a limited range, although there is no deterministic relation. >

01 Sep 2018TL;DR: The results show that the new UHF antenna is suitable for PD detection in oil-insulated transformer and its ultra-wide bandwidth frequency response can be a useful means for PD recognition.
Abstract: Partial discharge (PD) is a symptom of insulation defect or degradation in high-voltage power equipment. To detect the occurrence of PDs inside oil-filled power transformers, the ultra-high frequency (UHF) detection method is one that can be applied. To date, the sensors, as the most important part in the UHF method, have not been adequately addressed in terms of sensitivity and accuracy. This paper presents a novel UHF sensor called microstrip-fed planar elliptical monopole antenna. This antenna has a simple structure and ultra-wide frequency band. It is designed and simulated using CST software for parametric optimization. Following fabrication, its performance verification is carried out using an experimental test setup for PD source. In addition, comparison is made between various UHF antennas regarding their advantage and limitation. The results show that the new UHF antenna is suitable for PD detection in oil-insulated transformer and its ultra-wide bandwidth frequency response can be a useful means for PD recognition.
