TL;DR: In this paper, a single-channel pulse-height analyzer with suitable pulse-shaping circuits designed for partial discharge measurements is described, which can be used in conjunction with an RLC-type partial-discharge detection circuit and is thus applicable to discharge measurements on highvoltage apparatus such as transformers, capacitors, and cables.
Abstract: A single-channel pulse-height analyzer with suitable pulse-shaping circuits designed for partial-discharge measurements is described. The circuit of the pulse-height analyzer has a basic resolution limit of 1.5 ?s. The unit may be used in conjunction with an RLC-type partial-discharge-detection circuit and is thus applicable to discharge measurements on high-voltage apparatus such as transformers, capacitors, and cables. Typical results, obtained with an artificial void simulated with metallic-dielectric electrodes, are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the UV signal by corona discharge was detected from more than 60 kV, which was equivalent to around 37.5% of the breakdown voltage, and the UV strength increased with increasing high voltage and the supplying dc voltage.
Abstract: Inspections and diagnoses of corona discharges are important in order to prevent electrical faults of external insulation in power systems. This paper studies the measurement of ultraviolet rays (UV) strength of corona discharges on polymer insulators using a UV sensor with an optic lens. The data have been compared with the images of a UV camera. The UV signal by corona discharge was detected from more than 60 kV, which was equivalent to around 37.5% of the breakdown voltage. The UV strength increased with increasing high voltage and the supplying dc voltage. Also, UV image was observed. However, the longer the distance was, the greater the reduction in UV signals would be. The robust, inexpensive sensor can detect corona discharge activity on polymer insulators when the applied voltage exceeds 37.5% of the breakdown voltage.

TL;DR: In this paper, porous alumina ceramic sheets were used as a dielectric barrier and an atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) plasma was obtained, which was characterized by a homogeneous profile of long lifetime and the current is one pulse per half cycle of the power supply.
Abstract: Homogeneous atmospheric pressure discharge using a dielectric barrier discharge in air at 50 Hz was investigated. Porous alumina ceramic sheets were used as a dielectric barrier. In this paper we compare the filamentary discharge initiated by using glass sheets as a dielectric and the glow discharge obtained by the porous alumina sheets as a dielectric.Generally, the discharge in a dielectric barrier arrangement consists of a large number of filaments. Using porous alumina sheets Al2O3, an atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) plasma has been obtained. This APGD discharge is characterized by a homogeneous profile of long lifetime (~5 ms) and the current is one pulse per half cycle of the power supply. The electrical measurements and the emission spectrum confirm that the discharge has been formed in the glow mode.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors applied voltage to a test cell simulating a high-resistance conducting path in series with a cavity in polyethylene to generate chemical changes on the surface wall of the cavity for both subcorona currents (currents produced by voltage below critical inception voltage) and corona currents in different cavities.
Abstract: Calculations and experiments applying voltage to a test cell simulating a high-resistance conducting path in series with a cavity in polyethylene are discussed. These experiments generated chemical changes on the surface wall of the cavities for both subcorona currents (currents produced by voltage below critical inception voltage) and corona currents in different cavities. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of the cavity surface chemical species indicate similar moieties (functional groups), implying that subcorona current or discharge causes failures similar to corona insulation failures. The longer time for the subcorona species to develop is consistent with field failure occurrence within a few months to a few years. Electric field conditions favorable to the existence of subcorona currents at relatively low voltage are developed. >

TL;DR: In this article, the severity levels of partial discharge initiated by free moving metallic particles on GIS insulator surface were evaluated on a well-established 252 kV GIS experiment platform, and the experimental results indicated that partial discharge provoked by free-moving metallic particles in GIS goes through three severity levels, namely, minor discharge, moderate discharge, and threatening discharge.
Abstract: Free moving metallic particles are one of the most common defects leading to insulation failures in gas insulated substation (GIS) equipment. The present research is designed to diagnose and assess the severity levels of partial discharge (PD) initiated by free moving metallic particles on GIS insulator surface. On a well-established 252 kV GIS experiment platform, long term tests were conducted to observe the entire development process of partial discharge from its very initiation stage till eventual flashover as the applied voltage gradually boosted. Real time measurement was undertaken during the tests to capture the trend curve of partial discharge as a result of test time, scatter plot, histogram, grey-scale map, and time-frequency map of partial discharge. The experimental results indicate that 1) partial discharge provoked by free moving metallic particles in GIS goes through three severity levels, namely, minor discharge, moderate discharge, and threatening discharge; 2) as partial discharge develops, the phase distribution is widening and corresponding shape changes occur in the scatter plot, histogram, grey-scale map, and time-frequency map. It is recommended that the features of phase distribution and the corresponding spectra could be used as important criteria in diagnosing and assessing the severity levels of partial discharge initiated by free moving metallic particles on GIS insulator surface.
