TL;DR: In this article, a railway wheel made of Si-Mn-Mo-V low-carbon steel is described, which is composed of carbide-free bainite that consists of bainitic ferrite laths and retained austenite films along the lath boundaries.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of ferrite fraction in 0.17-0.8 wt% C steels with ferrite-pearlite microstructures on multi-frequency EM sensor readings has been studied.
Abstract: The effect of ferrite fraction, in 0.17–0.8 wt% C steels with ferrite–pearlite microstructures, on multi-frequency electromagnetic (EM) sensor readings has been studied. The measured initial relative permeability values agreed well with finite element microstructure model predictions. The EM sensor low frequency inductance value is sensitive to changes in relative permeability and the sensor can measure ferrite fraction in dual-phase steels. Therefore, EM sensors could be used to assess dual-phase (ferrite+pearlite/bainite/martensite) steel microstructures in a non-contact, non-destructive manner.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of the prior austenite grain size (AGS) on the isothermal decomposition in a Fe-C-Mn hypoeutectoid steel was evaluated.
Abstract: The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of the prior austenite grain size (AGS) on the austenite-to-pearlite isothermal decomposition in a Fe-C-Mn hypoeutectoid steel. Due to the strong influence, grain boundaries have on pearlite transformation kinetics, morphological aspects of pearlite from two conditions with very different AGS were studied and characterized. Results allow us to conclude that the formation of pearlite and ferrite are favored for small AGS values, whereas a larger AGS led to an increase in the total amount of pearlite volume fraction. Furthermore, the average size of pearlitic colonies increased with increasing AGS, and it appears that the interlamellar spacing of the pearlite does not depend on AGS, but instead, is controlled by the isothermal decomposition temperature. Finally, it was observed that the ratio between lamellar thickness of ferrite and cementite depended on AGS.

TL;DR: In this article, the microstructures and tensile properties of cold-rolled and annealed pearlite in Fe-0.8mass%C alloys with various contents of Mn and Si were investigated.
Abstract: The microstructures and tensile properties of cold-rolled and annealed pearlite in Fe-0.8mass%C alloys with various contents of Mn and Si were investigated. With the addition of Mn and Si, the tensile strength (TS) and yield strength (YS) of cold-rolled and annealed pearlite were vastly improved, but its effect on ductility of the cold-rolled pearlite is negligible. The addition of Si is quite effective in improving the ductility of cold-rolled and annealed pearlite, especially when the strength is at a higher level, i.e., lower annealing temperature or shorter annealing period. The optimal tensile properties in the alloys with Mn or Si were obtained after annealing at 723 K for short annealing periods (30 to 120 s). The combined addition of Mn and Si is more effective in improving the tensile properties of cold-rolled and annealed pearlite.
