Abstract: Internal reorganization energies and interchain transfer integrals are two key parameters governing the charge-transport properties of organic semiconducting materials. Here, in order to model some aspects of device operation in field-effect transistors based on conjugated oligomers, we investigate via semiempirical quantum-chemical calculations the way these two parameters are modified when a static electric field in the range 106–108 V/cm is applied along the long axis of pentacene and sexithienyl molecules. For the highest fields, a pronounced redistribution of the charges along the oligomer chains occurs, which is accompanied by significant geometric distortions. However, these charge redistribution effects are found not to impact significantly the transport parameters.

Abstract: Pentacene and hexacene both react with sulphur to form stable hexasulphides for which double fused thiathiophthen structures (6) and (8) or (9) are proposed. The electrical conductivity of hexacene hexasulphide is similar to that of the well-known naphthacene tetrasulphide (1) and 109 times greater than that of pentacene hexasulphide. Replacement of the sulphur in (1) by selenium gives a tetraselenide (14) of similar conductivity to (1). The new naphthaceno[5,6-cd][1,2]dithiole (10) is described.

Abstract: Transient photovoltage and charge extraction analyses are used to quantify the rate of nongeminate recombination loss within a pentacene/C60 bilayer solar cell across the power-generating quadrant of the device. Employing these data, a simple model of cell function, based on field-independent generation and a charge-dependent nongeminate loss current without the use of any adjustable fitting parameters, is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental current/voltage behavior of the device both in the dark and under illumination.
