TL;DR: Delayed infection with erythematous nodules, particularly when a foreign body is implanted weeks after periocular surgery, should arouse suspicion of an atypical mycobacterial infection.
Abstract: PurposeTo delineate the clinicopathologic features of patients who have atypical mycobacterial infections of the periorbital region after periocular and facial surgery and to define the sequelae after treatment and their management.MethodsA case series of patients from 7 practices of ophthalmic plas

TL;DR: This work overviews the most relevant research works in the scope of periocular recognition, summarizes the developed methods, and enumerates the current issues, providing a comparative overview.
Abstract: The periocular region has recently emerged as a promising trait for unconstrained biometric recognition, specially on cases where neither the iris and a full facial picture can be obtained. Previous studies concluded that the regions in the vicinity of the human eye - the periocular region- have surprisingly high discriminating ability between individuals, are relatively permanent and easily acquired at large distances. Hence, growing attention has been paid to periocular recognition methods, on the performance levels they are able to achieve, and on the correlation of the responses given by other. This work overviews the most relevant research works in the scope of periocular recognition: summarizes the developed methods, and enumerates the current issues, providing a comparative overview. For contextualization, a brief overview of the biometric field is also given.

TL;DR: A case of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome involving the periocular area is presented, a rare, noncaseating granulomatous disease of unknown cause, which may be confused with orbital tumors and orbital pseudotumors.
Abstract: A triad of facial palsy, facial edema, and furrowed tongue characterizes Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, a rare, noncaseating granulomatous disease of unknown cause. Although most reported cases of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome involve swelling of the perioral area, the authors present a case of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome involving the periocular area. Because of its rarity, the syndrome is usually ignored and misdiagnosed; however, the syndrome should not only be considered in the classic perioral presentation but also in the rare periocular form, which may be confused with orbital tumors and orbital pseudotumors. Biopsies should be performed routinely in all patients who present with eyelid edema of unknown etiology. The physician and surgeon who see patients with head and neck pathology should be familiar with Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, and with the possibility of its presentation in the orbit and periocular region.

TL;DR: Mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma is a rare ocular adnexal neoplasm that can involve the eyelid and periocular skin, can be locally invasive, and has a high risk of local recurrence despite Mohs surgery.
Abstract: Purpose To report 4 patients with mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma of the periocular region. Methods Interventional case series of 4 patients with mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma of the periocular region treated at 2 centers. Results Two patients with mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma of the upper eyelid, 1 with mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma of the lower eyelid, and 1 with mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma of the eyebrow were included in this report. The lower eyelid lesion and the eyebrow lesion recurred after Mohs micrographic surgery. Both recurrent lesions were treated with Mohs micrographic surgery and postoperative adjuvant external-beam radiation therapy. The other 2 primary tumors were treated with wide local excision with frozen section control of margins and did not recur. The follow-up time after the most recent surgical procedure ranged from 8 to 17 months (median, 12 months). Conclusions Mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma is a rare ocular adnexal neoplasm that can involve the eyelid and periocular skin, can be locally invasive, and has a high risk of local recurrence despite Mohs surgery.

TL;DR: A novel method for person identification based on the fusion of iris and periocular biometrics has been proposed and the comparison with the state-of-the-art methods with respect to these databases shows the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach.
