TL;DR: In this article, the authors characterize and mitigate electron transfer-proton transfer reactions between NiOx hole transport layers and perovskite precursors, and identify that Ni≥3+ metal cation sites in NiOx thin films act both as Bronsted proton acceptors and Lewis electron acceptors, deprotonating cationic amines and oxidizing iodide species.

TL;DR: In this article, an inorganic halide perovskite solar cell using a spray-assisted solution-processed CsPbIBr2 film is demonstrated, overcoming the solubility problem of bromide ion in the precursor solution that would otherwise occur in a single-step solution process.
Abstract: In this work, an inorganic halide perovskite solar cell using a spray-assisted solution-processed CsPbIBr2 film is demonstrated. The process allows sequential solution processing of the CsPbIBr2 film, overcoming the solubility problem of the bromide ion in the precursor solution that would otherwise occur in a single-step solution process. The spraying of CsI in air is demonstrated to be successful, and the annealing of the CsPbIBr2 film in air is also successful in producing a CsPbIBr2 film with an optical band gap of 2.05 eV and is thermally stable at 300 °C. The effects of the substrate temperature during spraying and the annealing temperature on film quality and device performance are studied. The substrate temperature during spraying is found to be the most critical parameter. The best-performing device fabricated using these conditions achieves a stabilized conversion efficiency of 6.3% with negligible hysteresis. Cesium metal halide perovskites remain viable alternatives to organic metal halide per...

TL;DR: The whole process of the lead perovskite synthesis consists of a series of equilibria driven by reversible solvent participation involving a polymeric strip of plumbate(II) oligomer as a key intermediate, which will help to rationalize the photovoltaic device studies that have so far remained empirical and to open a new venue to a developing field of microscale lead pervskite devices.
Abstract: Despite tremendous progress in optoelectronic devices using lead perovskite (CH3NH3+PbI3–), there has been a paucity of mechanistic information on how photoactive micron-sized crystals of lead perovskite grow from a mixture of a layered crystal of lead(II) iodide and methylammonium iodide mediated by a polar solvent, DMSO or DMF. We report here that the whole process of the lead perovskite synthesis consists of a series of equilibria driven by reversible solvent participation involving a polymeric strip of plumbate(II) oligomer as a key intermediate. A significant finding includes quick decomposition of perovskite crystal upon exposure to DMSO or DMF at room temperature, where the solvent molecules act as a base to remove acidic ammonium iodide from the perovskite crystal. This observation accounts for the difficulty in controlling perovskite solar cell fabrication. Overall, the polar solvent is indispensible first to degrade a 2-D sheet of crystals of lead(II) iodide into 1-D fibrous intermediates and th...

TL;DR: This work provides a simple and effective method to enhance the efficiency of the 2D perovskite solar cell and performs unique stability with almost unchanged PCE during the period of storage in purified N2 glove box.
Abstract: Vertically oriented highly crystalline 2D layered (BA)2 (MA)n-1 Pbn I3n+1 (BA = CH3 (CH2 )3 NH3 , MA = CH3 NH3 , n = 3, 4) perovskite thin-films are fabricated with the aid of ammonium thiocyanate (NH4 SCN) additive through one-step spin-coating process. The humidity-stability of the film is certified by the almost unchanged X-ray diffraction patterns after exposed to humid atmosphere (Hr = 55 ± 5%) for 40 d. The photovoltaic devices with the structure of indium tin oxide(ITO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate)/(BA)2 (MA)n-1 Pbn I3n+1 (n = 3,4)/[6,6]-phenyl-C61 -butyric acid methyl ester/Bathocuproine/Ag are fabricated. The devices based on (BA)2 (MA)2 Pb3 I10 perovskite (n = 3) with the precursor composition of BAI:methylammonium iodide:PbI2 :NH4 SCN = 2:2:3:1 (by molar ratio) show an averaged power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.82%. In the case of (BA)2 (MA)3 Pb4 I13 (n = 4), a higher PCE of 8.79% is achieved. Both of the unsealed devices perform unique stability with almost unchanged PCE during the period of storage in purified N2 glove box. This work provides a simple and effective method to enhance the efficiency of the 2D perovskite solar cell.
