TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a wake-up signal for a user to interact with a computer, and switch at least a portion of the computer into a more fully powered mode.
Abstract: Power usage in a personal computer is reduced by repetitively performing the following sequence of steps: a. generate a wake-up signal in connection with a user beginning to interact with the computer; b. in response to the wake-up signal, switch at least a portion of the computer into a more fully powered mode; and c. keep the portion of the computer in the more fully powered mode only as long as the user is delivering input to the computer, and thereafter immediately switch the portion of the computer into a less fully powered mode. A detector issues a wake-up signal when a user begins to interact with the computer; and control circuitry connected to the sensor switches between the more fully powered mode and the less fully powered mode. The sensor may be mounted in a keyboard that includes an array of keys, and a sensor mounted in a position to detect use of the keyboard even when the keyboard is in an unpowered state.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the life cycle environmental impact of personal computers and determined the desirable or feasible recycle rate of an end-of-life PC, based on different recycling scenario.
Abstract: Background, Aims and Scope Telecommunication and information technology, dramatically emerged during the last decade, has generated environmental problems by accelerating mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal of personal computers (PCs) in Korea. In addition, it has led the Korean new economy. The Korean government has encouraged researchers and industry to study the environmental impact, adequate disposal treatment, and the reasonable recycling rate of an end-of-life personal computer. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the life cycle environmental impact of PCs and to determine the desirable or feasible recycle rate of an end-of-life PC. An LCA on a PC was performed based on different recycling scenario. Target audiences are new product developers, designers, product recovery managers and environmental policy makers who are interested in the environmental impact of PCs and recycling of end-of-life products.

TL;DR: A wall-climbing robot intended for inspection in nuclear power plants has been developed and a detailed description of the mobile robot and its motion is given.
Abstract: A wall-climbing robot intended for inspection in nuclear power plants has been developed. The robot, small in size and modular, is made up of pneumatic components exclusively. Vacuum suction cups are used for sticking the robot to walls to be climbed. The robot motion, made up of both elementary translations and rotations, are accomplished by means of flexible pneumatic cylinders of rubber, which constitute the body of the mobile robot. A personal computer is used to command robot motion and a microprocessor controls the electronic valves of all pneumatic components. The paper presents the robotic system conceptual design and gives a detailed description of the mobile robot and its motion. >

TL;DR: Trial clinical applications demonstrated that the use of the newly developed 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system facilitated the otherwise complicated and time-consuming mock surgery for treatment planning in orthognathic surgery.
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to describe a newly developed 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system for the diagnostic set-up of casts in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, and its preliminary clinical applications. The system comprises a measuring unit which obtains 3D information from the dental model using laser scanning, and a personal computer to generate the 3D graphics. When measuring the 3D shape of the model, to minimize blind sectors, the model is scanned from two different directions with the slit-ray laser beam by rotating the mounting angle of the model on the measuring device. For computed simulation of tooth movement, the representative planes, defined by the anatomical reference points, are formed for each individual tooth and are arranged along a guideline descriptive of the individual arch form. Subsequently, the 3D shape is imparted to each of the teeth arranged on the representative plane to form an arrangement of the 3D profile. When necessary, orthognathic surgery can be simulated by moving the mandibular dental arch three-dimensionally to establish the optimum occlusal relationship. Compared with hand-made set-up models, the computed diagnostic cast has advantages such as high-speed processing and quantitative evaluation on the amount of 3D movement of the individual tooth relative to the craniofacial plane. Trial clinical applications demonstrated that the use of this system facilitated the otherwise complicated and time-consuming mock surgery for treatment planning in orthognathic surgery.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the spatial evolution of computers across 317 metro areas in the USA since the introduction of the personal computer and find strong evidence of significant dynamic own industry externalities for single plant firms and little evidence of urbanization-Jacobs-knowledge type externalities.
