Abstract: The design of interactive graphic systems whose aim is good symbiosis between man and machine involves numerous factors. Many of those factors can be judged from the perspective of natural spoken conversation between two people. Guiding rules and principles for design of such systems are presented as a framework for a survey of design techniques for man-machine conversation. Attention is especially focused on ideas of action syntax structuring, logical equivalences among action devices, and avoidance of psychological blocks to communication.

Abstract: Employing a commonweal conception of police organizations, the central aim of the present study was to determine the extent to which routine police arrest practices suggest police abuse of the societal delegated privilege to exercise non-negotiable coercive force. Public drunkenness encounters occurring in a large midwestern city were analyzed; and it was found that significantly higher rates of arrest were associated with offense conspicuousness, offender powerlessness, and offender disrespect. The major conclusion drawn is that the police abuse this societal delegated privilege. The implications of this conclusion for the commonweal conception of the police are discussed.

Abstract: According to the psychiatric perspective, social and economic resources facilitate the disturbed individual's entrance into psychiatric treatment. In contrast, the societal reaction perspective views resources as enabling the individual to avoid being channelled into the role of the mentally ill. This paper examines the role social and economic resources play in mental hospitalization, comparing the societal reaction and psychiatric perspectives. The information contained in the literature, as well as data obtained from 258 state hospital patients, indicates that the psychiatric perspective comes closer than the societal reaction perspective to describing what typically occurs.

Abstract: My aim in this paper is to analyze men’s power from the perspective afforded by the emerging antisexist men’s movement. In the last several years, an antisexist men’s movement has appeared in North America and in the Western European countries. While it is not so widely known as the women’s movement, the men’s movement has generated a variety of books, publications, and organizations* and is now an established presence. The present and future political relationship between the women’s movement and the men’s movement raises complex questions which I do not deal with here, though they are clearly important ones. Instead, here I present my own view of the contribution which the men’s movement and men’s analysis make to a feminist understanding of men and power, and of men’s power over women, particularly in relation to the power that men often perceive women have over them. Then I will analyze two other power relationships men are implicated in—men’s power with other men, and men’s power in society generally—and suggest how these two other power relationships interact with men’s power over women.

This does not match Rodney Stark’s description of the increased withdrawal of the police from public norms and their increased fear and paranoia. There is no account of the unionization of the police, nor of the kind of grievances they share, nor of how these grievances are handled. These are not defects of City Police but in our knowledge of policing. City Police is a fine book in its own right, and we should be grateful to Jonathan Rubinstein for deepening our knowledge of police and contributing what I predict will be an enduring ethnography of urban life in America.

The sources of male power suggested by these perspectives are identified, and the varying activities of the women's movement are discussed in terms of their potential impact on these forms of power.

Abstract: This chapter examines the Monthly Instructions , paying attention especially to the ways it can supplement other works, such as the standard histories, as a source for Later Han social history. Since the growth of the great families after the Later Han is one of the major social transitions of early Chinese History, it is important to examine the stages and processes of its development. The Monthly Instructions for the Four Classes of People has attracted the interest of many scholars. Ts'ui Shih's Monthly Instructions shows clan activities from a different, less political perspective. The Monthly Instructions offers advice on maintaining health in two distinct ways. One is the preparation of medicines, and the other is certain procedures which if followed will keep one in good health. From the information in Ts'ui Shih's Monthly Instructions it is possible to reconstruct many aspects of estate and family management in the Later Han. Abstract: The views expressed by Evans (1974), Oriel (1974), and Watt (1974), in their three most interesting, perceptive, but of necessity short papers presented at the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Diseases in January, 1974, were broadly similar to those of the recent International Travelling Seminar on Venereal Disease in the U.S.A. (Brit. J. vener. Dis., 1973)-namely in praise of the laboratories, both research and serological, but critical of many of the clinics in comparison with some found elsewhere, particularly in Britain. It is necessary, however, that the present American venereological scene should be viewed in the broader perspective of their enormous achievements in our subject, direct and indirect, many of which today tend to be taken for granted. The author's first professional visit to the United States was made early in 1946 (Wilcox, 1946a, 1946b, 1946c, 1951); his tenth and most recent was late in 1971 when he had the task, as Rapporteur-General, of co-ordinating the preparation of the report of the IUVDT Travelling Seminar (WHO, 1973; PAHO, 1974).
