TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce the concept of Petri nets (place/transition-nets), where actual system states are represented as distributions of "black" tokens onto the places of the nets.

TL;DR: The paper discusses the modeling power of the augmented formalism, and shows how the dynamics of the underlying stochastic process can be analytically described by a set of integro-differential equations.
Abstract: Fluid (or Hybrid) Petri Nets are Petri net based models with two classes of places: discrete places that carry a natural number of distinct objects (tokens), and fluid places that hold a positive amount of fluid, represented by a real number. With respect to previous formulations, the FSPN model presented in this paper, is augmented with a new primitive, called flush-out arc. A flush-out arc connects a fluid place to a timed transition, and has the effect of instantaneously emptying the fluid place when the transition fires. The paper discusses the modeling power of the augmented formalism, and shows how the dynamics of the underlying stochastic process can be analytically described by a set of integro-differential equations. A procedure is presented to automatically derive the solution equations from the model specifications. The whole methodology is illustrated by means of various examples.

TL;DR: A class of Petri nets is proposed to describe workflow processes, featuring safeness and guaranteed termination, and a set of transformation rules with sufficient power for this class is given that can be implemented in a graphical editor.
Abstract: The paper introduces ad hoc workflow, adding flexibility to traditional workflow. A problem that stems from the added flexibility is the need to support end users in the selection and modification of the process for a specific case. We propose a class of Petri nets to describe workflow processes, featuring safeness and guaranteed termination. A set of transformation rules with sufficient power for this class is given that can be implemented in a graphical editor. A second problem is monitoring the work being done. The solution is to approximate the states of the cases being treated by the states of a few standard cases.

TL;DR: This paper illustrates how equilibrium distributions for the markings of a wide class of nets can be found directly without the need to generate a large state space and then resort to equilibrium balance equations.
Abstract: Stochastic Petri Nets are used extensively to find performance measures for communication protocols. This paper illustrates how equilibrium distributions for the markings of a wide class of nets can be found directly without the need to generate a large state space and then resort to equilibrium balance equations.

TL;DR: A major update of the software tool TimeNET, a package for the modeling and performance evaluation of standard and colored stochastic Petri nets, is presented, which includes an efficient simulation module for complex colored models.
Abstract: The paper presents a major update of the software tool TimeNET, a package for the modeling and performance evaluation of standard and colored stochastic Petri nets. Among its main characteristics are simulation and analysis modules for stationary and transient evaluation of Petri nets including non-exponentially distributed delays, as well as an efficient simulation module for complex colored models. An overview of the tool is given as well as a description of the new features, which are demonstrated using a manufacturing system application example. The tool is available free of charge for non-commercial use.
