TL;DR: A new method for synthesizing deadlock avoidance controllers (DACs) that realize job and machine dispatching policies of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) into deadlock free control actions is developed, based on an untimed Petri net formalism.
Abstract: This paper develops a new method for synthesizing deadlock avoidance controllers (DACs) that realize job and machine dispatching policies of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) into deadlock free control actions. Such controllers not only keep the FMS capable of repeating any of its operations, but also achieve a high resource utilization under any given dispatching policy. Our methodology is based on an untimed Petri net formalism. It consists of four ingredients: 1) a bottom-up approach for synthesizing a controlled production Petri net (CPPN) model of a FMS; 2) a necessary and sufficient liveness condition based on decomposition of the CPPN into controlled production subnets and the concept of minimal resource requirements; 3) a sufficient procedure to test whether the liveness condition is kept after a control action is executed; and 4) an algorithm that combines the test procedure with the given dispatching policy to generate valid and utilization maximizing control actions. We assess that this method is of polynomial time complexity and show that it results in a much larger class of controls than that of an existing deadlock avoidance scheme. >

TL;DR: This paper is a survey of the work of the authors' team on hybridPNs (definition, properties, modeling), and contains new material such as the definition of extended hybrid PNs and several applications, explanations and comments about the timings in Petri nets, more on the conflict resolution in Hybrid PNs, and connection between hybrid PN and hybrid automata.
Abstract: Petri nets (PNs) are widely used to model discrete event dynamic systems (computer systems, manufacturing systems, communication systems, etc). Continuous Petri nets (in which the markings are real numbers and the transition firings are continuous) were defined more recently; such a PN may model a continuous system or approximate a discrete system. A hybrid Petri net can be obtained if one part is discrete and another part is continuous. This paper is basically a survey of the work of the authors' team on hybrid PNs (definition, properties, modeling). In addition, it contains new material such as the definition of extended hybrid PNs and several applications, explanations and comments about the timings in Petri nets, more on the conflict resolution in hybrid PNs, and connection between hybrid PNs and hybrid automata. The paper is illustrated by many examples.

TL;DR: This chapter considers the closure properties of the Petri Net Languages, their characterization, their relation to other language families, and the decidability of various problems concerning these languages.
Abstract: In a labeled Petri Net we assign symbols from an alphabet to some or all the transitions of a Petri Net. To each firing sequence of such a Labeled Petri Net corresponds to a string over the alphabet. We study the languages obtained in this way by all firing sequences of a Petri Net, or by all firing sequences which reach a given final marking. We consider the closure properties of these languages, their characterization, their relation to other language families, and the decidability of various problems concerning these languages. The last chapter relates Petri Nets to Counter Automata and Weak Counter Automata, introduces inhibitor Nets and Priority Nets, and considers extensions and limitations of the Petri Net Languages.

TL;DR: The aim of this invited survey is to introduce Computer science/Petri nets specialists to the basic system level issues brought up by the development of Flexible Manufacturing and how Petri nets are used to aid the production engineers in their work.
Abstract: The aim of this invited survey is to introduce Computer science/Petri nets specialists to the basic system level issues brought up by the development of Flexible Manufacturing and how Petri nets are used to aid the production engineers in their work. After some terminology concerning production engineering, the hierarchical decision and control level is briefly reviewed. Finally, the role and the presence of nets in CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) and in CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) for FMSs (Flexible Manufacturing Systems) are considered. From the design point of view, the use of nets have many advantages in modeling, qualitative analysis, performance evaluation and code generation. From the control of the plant perspective, scheduling on nets models, the coordination of the plant (global and partial) and the presence of nets in the local control level are discussed.
