Abstract: This paper investigates the use of Petri nets for modeling coordinated cyber-physical attacks on the smart grid. Petri nets offer more flexibility and expressiveness than traditional attack trees to represent the actions of simultaneous attackers. However, Petri net models for attacks on very large critical infrastructures such as the smart grid require a great amount of manual effort and detailed expertise in cyber-physical threats. To overcome these obstacles, we propose a novel hierarchical method to construct large Petri nets from a number of smaller Petri nets that can be created separately by different domain experts. The construction method is facilitated by a model description language that enables identical places in different Petri nets to be matched. The new modeling approach is described for an example attack on smart meters, and its efficacy is demonstrated by a proof-of-concept Python program.

Abstract: Petri net models and variants thereof have primarily been used to model structured systems such as computer programs, factory production lines, and engineering hardware. In contrast, this paper discusses the issues and challenges in the modeling of human activity in the workplace. This type of activity frequently has a large component that is unstructured, creative work. It is dynamic and difficult to capture via traditional Petri nets. Our research group at the University of Colorado has been investigating Information Control Nets (ICNs), derived from high level Petri nets, as a tool for modeling office workflow. After carefully explaining the notion of Workflow, this paper presents a formal (and also an informal) definition of ICN. We illustrate the utility of ICNs via an office analysis example.

Abstract: We have developed a Generalized Timed Petri Net (GTPN) model for evaluating the performance of computer systems. Our model is a generalization of the TPN model proposed by Zuberek [1] and extended by Razouk and Phelps [2]. In this paper, we define the GTPN model and present how performance estimates are obtained from the GTPN. We demonstrate the use of our automated GTPN analysis techniques on the dining philosophers example. This example violates restrictions made in the earlier TPN models. Finally, we compare the GTPN to the stochastic Petri net (SPN) models. We show that the GTPN model has capabilities for modeling and analyzing parallel systems lacking in existing SPN models. The GTPN provides an efficient, easily used method of obtaining accurate performance estimates for models of computer systems which include both deterministic and geometric holding times.

Abstract: A call center management system comprises a graphical user interface (GUI) adapted for modeling call center behavior, and the behavior of objects within a call center, as Petri Net directed graphs. Once developed, the Petri Net graphs can be compiled as software modules for use in CTI management of a call center. In another aspect the composed Petri Nets are assembled into high-level Petri Nets, and a Petri Net engine is employed to manage a call center. Management techniques and concepts taught are extended to network management as well.

Abstract: Although workflow management emerged as a research area well over a decade ago, little consensus has been reached as to what should be essential ingredients of a workflow specification language. As a result, the market is flooded with workflow management systems, based on different paradigms and using a large variety of concepts. The goal of this paper is to establish a formal foundation for control-flow aspects of workflow specification languages, that assists in understanding fundamental properties of such languages, in particular their expressive power. Workflow languages can be fully characterized in terms of the evaluation strategy they use, the concepts they support, and the syntactic restrictions they impose. A number of results pertaining to this classification will be proven. This should not only aid those developing workflow specifications in practice, but also those developing new workflow engines.
