TL;DR: In this paper, phase conjugation in stimulated backscatter of a focused aberrated beam, including the effects of pump depletion, has been investigated and shown to have a prominent axial spike closely matching that of the incident beam; however, the near field distribution had large and rapid spatial inhomogeneities.

Abstract: A method for sustaining multiply exposed photorefractive holograms, in a phase-locked fashion, by using a pair of phase-conjugating mirrors is described. It is shown that a steady state exists where the overall diffraction efficiency is independent of the number of holographic exposures and the final holograms are exactly in phase with the initial ones. Both analytical and experimental results are presented.

TL;DR: A phase-conjugate interferometer is described that is self-referencing, compact, and insensitive to environmental disturbances, provides twice the sensitivity of conventional interferometers, and produces a direct representation of an incident wave front.
Abstract: We describe a phase-conjugate interferometer that consists of a partially transmitting conventional mirror placed in front of and in close proximity to a phase-conjugate mirror. The interferometer is self-referencing, compact, and insensitive to environmental disturbances, provides twice the sensitivity of conventional (nonphase-conjugate) interferometers, and produces a direct representation of an incident wave front. We have constructed such a device using internally self-pumped phase conjugation in barium titanate and have used the device to characterize the wave front produced by an aberrated optical system.

TL;DR: Measurements of the two-wave mixing gain as a function of frequency detuning in photorefractive crystals are presented, indicating that the phase shift of the photoreFractive inde grating with respect to the light interference pattern is not exactly 90 degrees, as is often assumed.
Abstract: We present measurements of the two-wave mixing gain as a function of frequency detuning in photorefractive crystals. In many cases, this function is asymmetric, indicating that the phase shift of the photorefractive inde grating with respect to the light interference pattern is not exactly 90 degrees , as is often assumed. In four-wave mixing, the phase of the phase-conjugate wave contains the phase of the pumping and probe waves and a phase shift determined by the interaction taking place in the nonlinear medium. This second term, the phase shift of the phase conjugator, is a function of the type of grating and the phase shift of this grating. The phase shift of the grating obtained from the two-wave mixing measurements compares well with that obtained from four-wave mixing measurements of the phase of the phase conjugator.
