TL;DR: In this paper, a Butler-matrix-fed circular array is used to form a focussed radiation pattern when the proper current distribution is established on the inputs to the matrix.
Abstract: The Butler-matrix-fed circular array will form a focussed radiation pattern when the proper current distribution is established on the inputs to the matrix. Further, this beam can be scanned through 360° by changing only the phases of the matrix input currents, just as with a linear array scanning is accomplished by varying the phases of the element currents. This operation was experimentally demonstrated with a 32-dipole circular array and reasonable agreement was obtained between the measured and calculated patterns. Finally, a synthesis procedure is described for determining the matrix input currents required to attain a prescribed current distribution on the array.

TL;DR: In this paper, a co-fired ceramic material system was used to integrate antenna elements and an hermetic multi-chip MMIC cavity into a single module to provide incorporation of microwave circuit geometries.
Abstract: A phased array package using a cofired ceramic material system to integrate antenna elements and an hermetic multi-chip MMIC cavity into a single module to provide incorporation of microwave circuit geometries into a system which has been used in the prior art only for low frequency applications. The integration provides a package very similar to a conventional integrated circuit package with substantial cost reductions over the complicated microwave assemblies of the present art.

TL;DR: In this paper, the reliability of the phased array technique for quantifying airframe noise was assessed in the DNW-LLF open and closed wind tunnel sections, and the results showed that although the absolute integrated array level can be too low due to e.g. coherence loss, the relative sound levels determined with the array are accurate within 0.5 dB.
Abstract: The reliability of the phased array technique for quantifying airframe noise was assessed in the DNW-LLF open and closed wind tunnel sections. Acoustic measurements were performed on wing noise from a 1:10.6 scaled Airbus A340 model, using a 4-m diameter out-of-flow microphone array in the open jet and a 1-m diameter wall array in the closed test section. Apart from the differences in array resolution, the source characteristics are generally similar for both test sections. The open jet results show that, although the absolute integrated array level can be too low due to e.g. coherence loss, the relative sound levels determined with the array (i.e. differences between configurations) are accurate within 0.5 dB. The difference between the absolute array levels in the closed test section and the farfield levels in the open jet is smaller than 3 dB for all frequencies. The relative array levels in the closed test section agree with the open jet within 1 dB, provided that the flow conditions - and therefore t...

TL;DR: Two novel beamforming techniques for millimeter wave phased array receivers are developed and it is shown that one of the proposed beamforming methods has an excess gain of up to 14 dB when the line of sight link is obstructed by a human.
Abstract: Based on the indoor radio-wave propagation analysis, and the fundamental limits of CMOS technology it is shown that phased array technology is the ultimate solution for the radio and physical layer of the millimeter wave multi-Gb/s wireless networks. A low-cost, single-receiver array architecture with RF phase-shifting is proposed and design, analysis and measurements of its key components are presented. A high-gain, two-stage, low noise amplifier in 90 nm-CMOS technology with more than 20 dB gain over the 60 GHz spectrum is designed. Furthermore, a broadband analog phase shifter with a linear phase and low insertion loss variation is designed, and its measured characteristics are presented. Moreover, two novel beamforming techniques for millimeter wave phased array receivers are developed in this paper. The performance of these methods for line-of-sight and multipath signal propagation conditions is studied. It is shown that one of the proposed beamforming methods has an excess gain of up to 14 dB when the line of sight link is obstructed by a human.

TL;DR: In this article, an efficient decoupling network is developed to reduce the mutual coupling between adjacent elements for wide-angle impedance matching (WAIM), and a linear microstrip phased array has been designed and fabricated for experimental verification.
Abstract: The active impedance of each element in a phased array changes substantially with scan angle due to mutual coupling. Therefore, a key challenge in the design of wide-angle scanning phased array is to achieve wide-angle impedance matching (WAIM). In this communication, an efficient decoupling network is developed to reduce the mutual coupling between adjacent elements for this purpose. A complete scattering matrix analysis of the decoupling network is given and the design procedure is summarized. A ${1} \times {16}$ linear microstrip phased array has been designed and fabricated for experimental verification. Good agreement is obtained between measured and simulated results. The measured mutual coupling between adjacent elements is reduced to lower than $- {35}\; \text{dB}$ at the center frequency. Due to the reduced mutual coupling, the array can experimentally scan to 66° with a gain reduction of only 3.04 dB.
