Abstract: K-band aperture-coupled stacked microstrip antennas are studied and numerical results based on the solution of integral equations solved in the spectral domain are presented. The effects of varying physical parameters of the structure are investigated with the goal of designing millimeter-wave wideband microstrip antennas. Antennas with different characteristics are then analyzed and compared with experimental data. Bandwidths in excess of 20% are obtained and applications to phased array antennas are discussed. >

Abstract: Optical phased arrays are versatile components enabling rapid and precise beam steering. An integrated approach is followed in which a 1D optical phased array is fabricated on silicon-on-insulator. The optical phased array consists of 16 parallel grating couplers spaced 2 mum apart. Steering in one direction is done thermo-optically by means of a titanium electrode on top of the structure using the phased array principle, while steering in the other direction is accomplished by wavelength tuning. At a wavelength of 1550 nm, continuous thermo-optical steering of 2.3 degrees and wavelength steering of 14.1 degrees is reported.

Abstract: An ultrasound system and method for performing relatively non-invasive cardiac ablation on a patient. The system of the present invention includes a plurality of ultrasound transducers forming a phased array that is to be located externally of the patient. The array a focused beam of sufficient energy to ablate a predetermined cardiac tissue volume. The system is capable of refocusing the beam so that acoustical aberrations encountered by the beam, as it is transmitted through inhomogeneous body tissues between the array and the treatment volume, are taken into account and will not impede operation of the system. To refocus the beam, the system includes a senor which senses the phase distribution caused by the aberrations allowing a controller to calculate a compensating driving phase distribution and accordingly drive the array. The system also allows for real time correction of the beam's position enabling the beam to follow a moving myocardial target volume.

Abstract: A method for computing array element amplitude and phase distributions for direct synthesis of multiple-focus field patterns using ultrasonic phased arrays is shown to be capable of producing desired field levels at a set of control points in the treatment volume. The complex pressure at any of these control points can be chosen to produce the desired power deposition at the point, including reducing the field level to avoid potential hot spots, thus providing a powerful tool for hyperthermia treatment planning. The method also allows the complex excitation vector to be weighted to reduce the dynamic range of the driving signals without disturbing the relative field levels at the control points, allowing near maximum power transfer from the array into the treatment volume. >
