Abstract: Characterization of sediment phosphorus is commonly based on sequential chemical extractions, in which phosphorus is supposed to be selectively removed from different compounds in the sediments The first extraction schemes were designed to quantify discrete chemical or mineralogical compounds As extraction schemes have been tested on different sediments, several systematic errors have been detected and the schemes have been modified and simplified accordingly Other chemical extractions or treatments have attempted to determine phosphorus bound to particles with a certain strength or binding energy, the purpose being to determine the labile, loosely bound, exchangeable, mobile or algal-available fraction of sediment phosphorus All extraction procedures yield operationally defined fractions and cannot be used for identification of discrete phosphorus compounds The many methodological modifications make it necessary to be cautious when comparing results from the literature in this field

Abstract: Phosphorus forms with respect to sediment characteristics, such as grain-size, and major chemical elements, were studied in French coastal marine areas (the Bay of Seine and the Loire and Gironde Estuaries). In the three areas, Fe/Al-bound phosphate (Fe/Al-P) and exchangeable phosphate (exch-P) were significantly related to the proportion of fine fraction ( Calcium-bound phosphate (Ca-P) was found in all grain size classes with comparable concentrations in the Bay of Seine where there was no correlation between Ca-P and Ca. This corresponded to the calcium's marine origin (shells) in the Bay of Seine. In contrast, the correlation of Ca-P with Ca and the fine fraction of the sediment in the Loire and Gironde Estuaries was characteristic of the predominant metamorphic origin of Ca-P in these areas. Useful information for interpretation of P-forms can be obtained from major sediment characteristics. Thus, for areas where specific relationships have previously been established good estimates of P-forms could be predicted from sediment properties.

Abstract: 1. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the dietary addition of fungal phytase (derived from Aspergillus niger) on the performance and phosphorus utilisation in broiler chickens receiving low phosphorus diets without additional inorganic phosphates. 2. Graded amounts of supplemental phytase (125, 250, or 500 PU/kg diet) resulted in significant increases in both growth rate and food intake. However, only moderate improvements in food conversion were noted. 3. The enhancement of chick performance was related to an improved utilisation of dietary phosphorus, as confirmed by significantly elevated plasma concentrations of inorganic phosphorus and increased tibia ash percentages in birds receiving phytase-treated diets. The apparent availability of phosphorus was markedly improved and its concentration in excreta was reduced (experiment 1, P < 0.05). 4. It was concluded that an inclusion of phytase into practical broiler diet will allow the reduction or omission of additional dietary inorganic phosphorus.
