TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyze three wave mixing processes in nonlinear photonic crystals in which the modula- tion is either periodic, quasi-periodic, radially symmetric or even random.
Abstract: Quadratic nonlinear photonic crystals are materials in which the second order susceptibility is spatially mod- ulated while the linear susceptibility remains constant. These structures are significantly different than the more common pho- tonic crystals, in which the linear susceptibility is modulated. Nonlinear processes in nonlinear photonic crystals are governed by the phase matching requirements, which are determined by the reciprocal lattice of these crystals. Therefore, the modulation of the nonlinear susceptibility enables to engineer the spatial and spectral response in various three-wave mixing processes. It enables to support the efficient generation of new optical fre- quencies at multiple directions. We analyze three wave mixing processes in nonlinear photonic crystals in which the modula- tion is either periodic, quasi-periodic, radially symmetric or even random. We discuss both one-dimensional and two-dimensional modulations. In addition to harmonic generations, we outline several new possibilities for all-optical control of the spatial and polarization properties of optical beams in specially designed nonlinear photonic crystals. Some examples of nonlinear photonic crystals. TL;DR: In this paper, Luo et al. investigated lensing of electromagnetic waves by a negative refractive-index material slab constructed from a two-dimensional photonic crystal with properly designed equifrequency-surface configuration and found that the overall imaging properties of this photonic slab are dominantly governed by the self-collimation effect and complex near-field wave scattering effect, rather than by the all-angle negative-refraction effect.
Abstract: We systematically investigate lensing of electromagnetic waves by a negative refractive-index material slab constructed from a two-dimensional photonic crystal with properly designed equifrequency-surface configuration [Luo et al., Phys. Rev. B 65, 201104 (2002)]. We find that a point source placed in the vicinity of the slab can form a good-quality image in the opposite side of the slab. However, the image is strongly confined in the near-field region of the slab and gradually degrades and disappears when moved beyond the near-field domain. In addition, the image-slab distance has little dependence on the source-slab distance and the slab thickness. On the other hand, the image can also form by a slab with a positive effective refractive index. We have analyzed the equifrequency-surface contour configuration of this photonic crystal and found that the overall imaging properties of this photonic crystal slab are dominantly governed by the self-collimation effect and complex near-field wave scattering effect, rather than by the all-angle negative-refraction effect.

TL;DR: An in-plane, multi-channel drop filter with high efficiency, in a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) slab, is experimentally demonstrated.
Abstract: An in-plane, multi-channel drop filter with high efficiency, in a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) slab, is experimentally demonstrated. Based on the concept of heterostructure photonic crystals proposed previously, the device consists of multiple simply connected, PC-based filter units, in which each unit has a structure proportional to an optimized basic unit and operates at a different wavelength. Four-channel drop operation was successfully obtained, with high efficiencies of almost 100%, and equal quality factors, across all channels.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dispersion relation of the coupled-resonator optical waveguide (CROW) band can be described by a small coupling parameter, and the spatial characteristics of the CROW modes remain the same as those of the single-reonator high Q modes.
Abstract: Using both the tight-binding approximation and the finite-difference time domain method, we analyze two types of coupled-resonator optical waveguide (CROW), a coupled-microdisks waveguide and a waveguide composed of coupled defect cavities in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. We find that the dispersion relation of the CROW band can be simply described by a small coupling parameter , and the spatial characteristics of the CROW modes remain the same as those of the single-resonator high Q modes. As applications of these unique properties, we demonstrate that CROWs can be utilized in constructing waveguides without cross talk and enhance the efficiency of second-harmonic generation.

TL;DR: In this article, a wet chemical digital etching technique was developed for tuning the resonant wavelengths of photonic crystal nanocavities over a wide range of 80nm in precise 2-3nm steps while preserving high cavity quality factors.
Abstract: We have developed a wet chemical digital etching technique for tuning the resonant wavelengths of photonic crystal (PC) nanocavities over a wide range of 80nm in precise 2–3nm steps while preserving high cavity quality factors. In one tuning step, a few monolayers of material are removed from the cavity surface by etching a self-formed native oxide in 1mol citric acid. Due to the self-limiting oxide thickness, total tuning range is based only on the number of etch steps, resulting in a highly controlled, digital tuning ability. We have characterized the tuning behavior of GaAs PC defect cavities of both square and triangular lattice symmetry and proven the effectiveness of this method by tuning a mode into resonance with the charged exciton, and then later the biexciton, transition of a single InAs∕GaAs self-assembled quantum dot.
