Abstract: Enhanced coupling to vertical radiation is obtained from a light-emitting diode using a two-dimensional photonic crystal that lies entirely inside the upper cladding layer of an asymmetric quantum well structure. A sixfold enhancement in light extraction in the vertical direction is obtained without the photonic crystal penetrating the active material. The photonic crystal is also used to couple pump light at normal incidence into the structure, providing strong optical excitation.

Abstract: A systematic theoretical investigation is undertaken in order to identify a two‐dimensional periodic dielectric structure that has a complete in‐plane photonic band gap for both polarizations. Of the various structures studied, only a triangular lattice of air columns is found to have the desired band‐gap properties. Microwave transmission experiments are performed to test the theoretical predictions.

Abstract: We present an analysis of the optical structure of a representative diatom, Coscinodiscus granii. The silica cell wall can be regarded as a photonic crystal slab waveguide with moderate refractive-index contrast. In a cell, at least two different patterns are found: a hexagonal array of pores with a large lattice constant in the valve, and a square array of holes with a small lattice constant in the girdle. It is demonstrated that light can be coupled into the waveguide and that there are some photonic resonances in the visible spectral range, which have been determined by band-structure calculations.

Abstract: We observed a significant enhancement in light output from GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in which two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) patterns were integrated. Two-dimensional square-lattice air-hole array patterns with a period that varied from 300 to 700 nm were generated by laser holography. Unlike the commonly utilized electron-beam lithographic technique, the holographic method can make patterns over a large area with high throughput. The resultant PC-LED devices with a pattern period of ∼500nm had more than double the output power, as measured from the top of the device. The experimental observations are qualitatively consistent with the results of three-dimensional finite-difference-time-domain simulation.
