TL;DR: It is numerically demonstrated that ultrahigh-Q (2.0x10(8)) and wavelength-sized (V(eff) approximately 1.4(lambda/n)3) cavities can be achieved by employing only 1D periodicity.
Abstract: Recently, various wavelength-sized cavities with theoretical Q values of approximately 10(8) have been reported, however, they all employ 2D or 3D photonic band gaps to realize strong light confinement. Here we numerically demonstrate that ultrahigh-Q (2.0x10(8)) and wavelength-sized (V(eff) approximately 1.4(lambda/n)3) cavities can be achieved by employing only 1D periodicity.

TL;DR: In this article, a laser holography method was used to fabricate three-dimensional photoresist templates by placing a specially designed "prism" onto the photoresists surface.
Abstract: We fabricate three-dimensional photoresist templates by means of laser holography. In particular, fcc structures are achieved by placing a specially designed “prism” onto the photoresist surface. This solves the problem of previous work, in which the refraction at the air–photoresist interface made it impossible to obtain the required angles of the light wave vectors inside the photoresist. The photoresist templates are characterized by scanning electron microscopy as well as by optical transmission spectroscopy, which agree well with numerical band-structure calculations.

TL;DR: The symmetric compatible nature of the off-Γ BICs leads to a trapping of light that can be tuned through continuously varying the wave vector, and the existence of a new BIC at an unrevealed symmetry is predicted.
Abstract: We investigate the formation of photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs from an analytical perspective. Unlike the stationary at-Γ BICs which originate from the geometric symmetry, the tunable off-Γ BICs are due to the weighted destructive via the continuum interference in the vicinity of accidental symmetry when the majority of the radiation is precanceled. The symmetric compatible nature of the off-Γ BICs leads to a trapping of light that can be tuned through continuously varying the wave vector. With the analytical approach, we explain a reported experiment and predict the existence of a new BIC at an unrevealed symmetry.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrate a class of guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs, where out-of-plane scattering losses are strongly suppressed due to their topological nature.
Abstract: Due to their ability to confine light, optical resonators are of great importance to science and technology, yet their performances are often limited by out-of-plane scattering losses from inevitable fabrication imperfections. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a class of guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs, where out-of-plane scattering losses are strongly suppressed due to their topological nature. Specifically, these resonances arise when multiple bound states in the continuum - each carrying a topological charge - merge in the momentum space and enhance the quality factors of all resonances nearby. We experimentally achieve quality factors as high as $4.9\times 10^5$ based on these resonances in the telecommunication regime, which is 12-times higher than ordinary designs. We further show this enhancement is robust across the samples we fabricated. Our work paves the way for future explorations of topological photonics in systems with open boundary condition and their applications in improving optoelectronic devices in photonic integrated circuits.
