Processing Coordinate Structures

Abstract: Coordination often involves syntactically like categories. Based on the results of four reading time studies, it is argued here that the syntactic like-category restriction is not grammatical. Coordination of unlike categories can be just as acceptable as coordination of like categories. However, syntactically like category coordination is processed faster than coordination of unlike categories even when the two sentence types are judged to be fully acceptable. Further, parallelism of conjuncts facilitates processing regardless of whether it is parallelism in the category of the conjuncts (a property which the grammar might regulate) or parallelism in the internal structure of the conjuncts (a property which the grammar does not regulate, on anyone's view). Parallelism did not facilitate processing when the structure of a subject and object were manipulated, implying that parallelism effects are largely limited to the conjuncts of a coordinate structure and not due simply to the repetition of a phrase with a particular shape.

Suggest that a well‐crafted mission statement can provide advantages or benefits to a company. States mission statements need to be longer than a phrase or sentence, but not a two‐page document, and not overly specific with regard to values, percentages, numbers, goals, or strategies. Concludes that better mission statements will give rewarding payoffs, meaning enhanced personal and business performance.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method, a system and a computer product for generating a snippet for an entity, wherein each snippet comprises a plurality of sentiments about the entity. One or more textual reviews associated with the entity is selected. A plurality of sentiment phrases are identified based on the one or more textual reviews, wherein each sentiment phrase comprises a sentiment about the entity. One or more sentiment phrases from the plurality of sentiment phrases are selected to generate a snippet.

Combining Word-Level and Character-Level Models for Machine Translation Between Closely-Related Languages

Abstract: We propose several techniques for improving statistical machine translation between closely-related languages with scarce resources. We use character-level translation trained on n-gram-character-aligned bitexts and tuned using word-level BLEU, which we further augment with character-based transliteration at the word level and combine with a word-level translation model. The evaluation on Macedonian-Bulgarian movie subtitles shows an improvement of 2.84 BLEU points over a phrase-based word-level baseline.

Generation by Inverting a Semantic Parser that Uses Statistical Machine Translation

Abstract: This paper explores the use of statistical machine translation (SMT) methods for tactical natural language generation. We present results on using phrase-based SMT for learning to map meaning representations to natural language. Improved results are obtained by inverting a semantic parser that uses SMT methods to map sentences into meaning representations. Finally, we show that hybridizing these two approaches results in still more accurate generation systems. Automatic and human evaluation of generated sentences are presented across two domains and four languages.
