TL;DR: MMPI profiles from a random sample of physical (nonpsychiatric) disability insurance claimants were compared with those of general medical patients, matched for age and sex, seen at the Mayo Clinic, confirming earlier clinical findings that between 35 and 44 percent of the physical disability sample suffered from moderate to severe psychoneuroses or personality disorders.
Abstract: MMPI profiles from a random sample of 1,064 physical (nonpsychiatric) disability insurance claimants were compared with those of 14,306 general medical patients, matched for age and sex, seen at the Mayo Clinic. In contrast with the latter, the disability insurance claimants produced mean profiles in the clinically significant range. These results confirm earlier clinical findings that between 35 and 44 percent of the physical disability sample suffered from moderate to severe psychoneuroses or personality disorders.

TL;DR: In order to produce a paradigm which traces the course of the struggle, concepts derived from several disciplines can be integrated through consideration of self-boundaries and freedom of movement as influenced by a mourning reaction directly comparable to confrontation of finitude.
Abstract: The onset of traumatic or chronic progressive physical disability poses an existential crisis for the stricken adult; consequently, the client may plunge into episodic transient personality disorder. When the patient begins to assimilate the reality of his predicament, either unaided or facilitated through therapeutic intervention, he experiences disruption ofthe personal life space and accustomed activity set. First, his security relative to the cosmos is jeopardized since his body image, a vital component of the client's concept of his own humanity, must be reevaluated. Secondly, interpersonal relations are altered or disturbed due to perceived dependency demands, whether in fact real or imagined. Finally, the internal dynamics of the individual's personality are in flux: such turmoil can be threatening in itself. In order to produce a paradigm which traces the course of the struggle, concepts derived from several disciplines can be integrated through consideration of self-boundaries and freedom of movement as influenced by a mourning reaction directly comparable to confrontation of finitude.
