Abstract: Structural vibration can be reduced by shunting an attached piezoelectric transducer (PZT) with an electrical impedance. Current shunt circuit designs, e.g. a single-mode inductor–resistor network, typically require large inductance values of up to thousands of henries. In practice, discrete inductors are limited in size to around 1 H. By placing an additional capacitance across the terminals of the PZT, shunt circuit inductances can be drastically reduced. To justify our claims, we present a theoretical analysis of the damped system and identify the influence of the additional capacitance. Two modes of a simply supported beam are successfully damped using a capacitance modified shunt circuit. A low inductance multi-mode circuit is also studied and experimentally verified.

The piezoelectric film is formed of a relaxor material that has a perovskite type rhombohedral structure, and is preferentially oriented to pseudo cubic (100).

Abstract: Damage detection in composite laminated panels using Lamb waves is demonstrated with an innovative use of a sensor array and processing algorithm. Two models were developed to characterize the Lamb wave propagation properties of orthotropic panels. Predictions of the dispersion relations were made for a fiber-reinforced composite laminate. Experiments were conducted to empirically characterize the wave propagation behavior in a manufactured laminate. Piezoelectric patches were used as sensors and actuators in the experiments. Comparisons were made between analytical predictions and experimental results, which demonstrate that the higher order model captured essential wave propagation behavior at frequencies of interest. Sensor arrays and associated processing were used for wavenumber decomposition and filtering of the Lamb wave modes. Abstract: This paper investigates the analysis and design of a vibration-based energy harvester for rotary motion applications. The energy harvester consists of a cantilever beam with a tip mass and a piezoelectric ceramic attached along the beam that is mounted on a rotating shaft. Using this system, mechanical vibration energy is induced in the flexible beam due to the gravitational force applied to the tip mass while the hub is rotating. The piezoelectric transducer is used to convert the induced mechanical vibration energy into electricity. The equations of motion of the flexible structure are utilized along with the physical characteristics of the piezoelectric transducer to derive expressions for the electrical power. Furthermore, expressions for the optimum load resistance and maximum output power are obtained and validated experimentally using PVDF and PZT transducers. The results indicate that a maximum power of 6.4 mW at a shaft speed of 138 rad/s can be extracted by using a PZT transducer with dimensions 50.8 mm × 38.1 mm × 0.13 mm. This amount of power is sufficient to provide power for typical wireless sensors such as accelerometers and strain gauges.

Abstract: An active damage interrogation (ADI) method which uses an array of piezoelectric (PZT) transducers attached to a structure was used to detect and localize disbonds and delaminations of advanced composite reinforcement from concrete structures. The ADI system provides the ability to detect, localize, and estimate the extent of the disbond by actively exciting the structure with PZT transducers and processing the structural response as measured by the PZT transducers. The ADI system makes use of both amplitude and phase information from various actuator/sensor transfer functions, and also provides a unique method for determining when the transducer/structure bond has degraded. This paper investigates the feasibility of using the ADI method for health monitoring of concrete structures repaired with composite materials, and the advantages and limitation of this method are discussed.
