TL;DR: Piper longum has been shown to be N -(3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamoyl)-3, 4-dihydro-2-pyridone and piperlonguminine the isobutylamide of piperic acid as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Publisher Summary The alkaloids of the roots of Piper longum L have been the subject of recent investigations Piperlongumine (C 17 H 19 O 5 N), piperine, and piperlonguminine (C 16 H 19 O 3 N) have been isolated from P longum Piperlongumine, the major alkaloid, has been shown to be N -(3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamoyl)-3,4-dihydro-2-pyridone and piperlonguminine the isobutylamide of piperic acid The treatment of the acid chloride of the latter with piperidine gives a product having an R F value similar to that of piplartine and it has been suggested that piplartine is the piperidide of 3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamic acid The IR-spectrum of the base l -pelletierine sulfate has been found to show carbonyl absorption at 1710 cm -1 , but no absorption because of an aldehyde C–H stretching vibration This chapter discusses lobelia and sedum alkaloids The configuration of racemic 8,10-diphenyllobelionol has been determined as (2R,6S,8R) (2S,6R,8S) by the removal of the phenacyl side chain and correlation of the product with 8-phenyllobelol The chapter also discusses the alkaloids of Hemlock and tobacco, along with describing a color test utilizing isatin for piperidine and pyrrolidine alkaloids containing the structural unit—NH-CH 2 -CH 2 The chapter details the biogenesis of nicotine, anabasine, and ricinine and discusses the alkaloids of Withania somnifera dual, pinus, Tripterygium wilfordii Hook and Evonymus europaeus L, Adenocarpus spp, Astrocasia phyllanthoides , and Halfordia
