TL;DR: In this paper, high fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate how synthetic jet frequency and orientation alter the dynamic stall leading-edge boundary vorticity flux, and the role of synthetic jets in the formation of large dynamic stall vortices.
Abstract: Vorticity creation and its evolution play an important role in the formation of large dynamic stall vortices which cause large excursions in lift, drag and pitching moment on rapidly pitching and oscillating airfoils. While synthetic jets have shown potential in controlling dynamic stall vortices by sustaining lift increases without corresponding drag and pitching moment, their effect on the vorticity creation remains unknown. To address this, high fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate how synthetic jet frequency and orientation alter the dynamic stall leading-edge boundary vorticity flux. Changes in baseline boundary vorticity flux were related to corresponding flow fields to delineate the role of synthetic jets in vorticity creation. Slot orientation was found to play a greater role in altering the amount of vorticity diffused into the flow than actuation frequency. Dynamic stall vortex sizes were found to be directly proportional to the vorticity diffused from the leading-edge and could therefore be effectively manipulated using synthetic jets. The study provides a better understanding of the dynamic stall vorticity creation process and its control using synthetic jets.

TL;DR: In this article, an oscillating NACA 0012 airfoil utilizing a tunnel-spanning wing in both unswept and 30 degree swept configurations was tested in steady state and in oscillatory pitch about the quarter chord.
Abstract: Aerodynamic experiments were performed on an oscillating NACA 0012 airfoil utilizing a tunnel-spanning wing in both unswept and 30 degree swept configurations. The airfoil was tested in steady state and in oscillatory pitch about the quarter chord. The unsteady aerodynamic loading was measured using pressure transducers along the chord. Numerical integrations of the unsteady pressure transducer responses were used to compute the normal force, chord force, and moment components of the induced loading. The effects of sweep on the induced aerodynamic load response was examined. For the range of parameters tested, it was found that sweeping the airfoil tends to delay the onset of dynamic stall. Sweeping was also found to reduce the magnitude of the unsteady load variation about the mean response. It was determined that at mean incidence angles greater than 9 degrees, sweep tends to reduce the stability margin of the NACA 0012 airfoil; however, for all cases tested, the airfoil was found to be stable in pure pitch. Turbulent eddies were found to convect downstream above the upper surface and generate forward-moving acoustic waves at the trailing edge which move upstream along the lower surface.

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical study of centerline and off-centerline power deposition at a point upstream of a two-dimensional blunt body at Mach 6.5 at 30 km altitude is presented.
Abstract: A numerical study of centerline and off-centerline power deposition at a point upstream of a two-dimensional blunt body at Mach 6.5 at 30 km altitude are presented. The full Navier-Stokes equations are used. Wave drag, lift, and pitching moment are presented as a function of amount of power absorbed in the flow and absorption point location. It is shown that wave drag is considerably reduced. Modifications to the pressure distribution in the flow field due to the injected energy create lift and a pitching moment when the injection is off-centerline. This flow control concept may lead to effective ways to improve the performance and to stabilize and control hypersonic vehicles.

TL;DR: In this article, a non-symmetrical swallow tail shaped cavity body is attached to the trailing edge of the aerodynamic element (10) of a wind turbine rotor blade.
Abstract: Aerodynamic element having a cross section in an airflow direction with a trailing edge (10c). The aerodynamic element (10) further comprises a non-symmetrical swallow tail shaped cavity body (1, 2) attached to the trailing edge (10c) of the aerodynamic element (10).The aerodynamic element (10) is e.g. applied in a rotor blade for a wind turbine.
