Abstract: Tungsten carbide exhibits platinum-like behavior, which makes it an interesting potential substitute for noble metals in catalytic applications. Tungsten carbide nanocrystals (≈5 nm) are directly synthesized through the reaction of tungsten precursors with mesoporous graphitic C(3)N(4) (mpg-C(3)N(4)) as the reactive template in a flow of inert gas at high temperatures. Systematic experiments that vary the precursor compositions and temperatures used in the synthesis selectively generate different compositions and structures for the final nanocarbide (W(2)C or WC) products. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the WC phase with a high surface area exhibits both high activity and stability in hydrogen evolution over a wide pH range. The WC sample also shows excellent hydrogen oxidation activity, whereas its activity in oxygen reduction is poor. These tungsten carbides are successful cocatalysts for overall water splitting and give H(2) and O(2) in a stoichiometric ratio from H(2)O decomposition when supported on a Na-doped SrTiO(3) photocatalyst. Herein, we present tungsten carbide (on a small scale) as a promising and durable catalyst substitute for platinum and other scarce noble-metal catalysts in catalytic reaction systems used for renewable energy generation.

Abstract: Focused ion beam induced deposition of platinum from a precursor gas of (methylcyclopentadienyl)trimethyl platinum has been demonstrated. This organometallic compound is solid at room temperature with a vapor pressure of 0.054 Torr. Ga+ ions at 30–40 keV have been used. The resistivity and composition of the film and the deposition yield have been measured as a function of ion current density, line dose, substrate temperature, geometry, and supplemental hydrogen pressure. Yield varies from 0.2 to 34, and resistivity varies from 70 to 700 μΩ cm depending on the conditions. The resistivity and content of the carbon impurity are reduced as the ion current increases: the lowest resistivity is observed at the highest current density corresponding to 0.222 nA at scan speed 500 cm/s repeated over a 350 μm long line. The minimum linewidth achieved so far is 0.3 μm. Transmission electron microscopy shows the Pt film to be amorphous, and Auger analysis gives the film composition 46% Pt, 24% C, 28% Ga, and 2% O. Abstract: Photosynthesis is a process wherein the chromophores in plants and bacteria absorb light and convert it into chemical energy. To mimic this process, an emissive poly(ethylene glycol)-decorated tetragonal prismatic platinum(II) cage was prepared and used as the donor molecule to construct a light-harvesting system in water. Eosin Y was chosen as the acceptor because of its good spectral overlap with that of the metallacage, which is essential for the preparation of light-harvesting systems. Such a combination showed enhanced catalytic activity in catalyzing the cross-coupling hydrogen evolution reaction, as compared with eosin Y alone. This study offers a pathway for using the output energy from the light-harvesting system to mimic the whole photosynthetic process.
