TL;DR: The evolution from asynchronous to synchronous dual-wavelength pulse generation in a passively mode-locked fiber laser is experimentally investigated by tailoring the intracavity dispersion and it is shown that pulses are temporally synchronized at the mode-locker in the cavity.
Abstract: The evolution from asynchronous to synchronous dual-wavelength pulse generation in a passively mode-locked fiber laser is experimentally investigated by tailoring the intracavity dispersion. Through tuning the intracavity-loss-dependent gain profile and the birefringence-induced filter effect, asynchronous dual-wavelength soliton pulses can be generated until the intracavity anomalous dispersion is reduced to ∼8 fs/nm. The transition from asynchronous to synchronous pulse generation is then observed at an elevated pump power in the presence of residual anomalous dispersion, and it is shown that pulses are temporally synchronized at the mode-locker in the cavity. Spectral sidelobes are observed and could be attributed to the four-wave-mixing effect between dual-wavelength pulses at the carbon nanotube mode-locker. These results could provide further insight into the design and realization of such dual-wavelength ultrafast lasers for different applications such as dual-comb metrology as well as better understanding of the inter-pulse interactions in such dual-comb lasers.

TL;DR: Simulation results show that the required computation for DBP of dispersion managed transoceanic transmission systems can be reduced by up to 2 orders of magnitude with negligible penalty using folded digital backward propagation (DBP).
Abstract: In periodically dispersion managed long-haul transmission systems, waveform distortion is dominated by chromatic dispersion. As a result of the periodic waveform evolution, the nonlinear behavior also repeats itself in every dispersion period. It is shown that, under the weakly nonlinear assumption, nonlinear effects accumulated in a large number (K) of spans can be approximated by nonlinear effects accumulated in a single span with the same dispersion map and K times the nonlinearity. Thus, significant savings in computational load can be achieved in digital compensation of fiber nonlinearity using folded digital backward propagation (DBP). Simulation results show that the required computation for DBP of dispersion managed transoceanic transmission systems can be reduced by up to 2 orders of magnitude with negligible penalty using folded DBP.

TL;DR: Compared with the generally used constant modulus algorithm (CMA), the proposed Kalman scheme provides excellent performance and stability to cope with large range DGD from 20ps to 200ps and RSOP from 200krad/s to 2Mrad/s, with less computational complexity.
Abstract: A window-split frequency domain Kalman scheme is proposed in this paper for the equalization of large polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and ultra-fast rotation of state-of-polarization (RSOP) which is an extreme environment due to the Kerr effect and the Faraday effect under the lightning strike near the fiber cables. In order to carry out the proposed Kalman scheme, we give a simplified and equivalent fiber channel model as a replacement for the general model of the polarization effect of the co-existence of PMD and RSOP. With this fiber channel model, we can conduct compensation for PMD in the frequency domain and tracking RSOP in time domain. A half analytical and half empirical theory for the initialization of the process and measurement noise covariance is also presented in theory and verified by the numerical simulation. The performance of the proposed Kalman scheme is checked in the 28Gbaud PDM-QPSK coherent system built on both simulation and experiment platforms. The simulation and experiment results confirm that compared with the generally used constant modulus algorithm (CMA), the proposed scheme provides excellent performance and stability to cope with large range DGD from 20ps to 200ps and RSOP from 200krad/s to 2Mrad/s, with less computational complexity.

TL;DR: In this paper, a variable dispersion compensator for compensating for the dispersion of optical signal input via an optical transmission path is presented. But the compensation of waveform degradation caused by dispersion characteristics is not automatic.
Abstract: The present invention aims at realizing a dispersion compensating method capable of readily conducting automatic compensation of waveform degradation caused by dispersion characteristics of an optical transmission path, and at providing a dispersion compensating apparatus and an optical transmission system, of a smaller size at a reduced cost. To this end, the dispersion compensating apparatus of the present invention comprises: a variable dispersion compensator for compensating for the dispersion of optical signal input via an optical transmission path; a bit error information monitoring circuit for generating bit error information of a received signal output from the variable dispersion compensator via an optical receiving circuit; and a controlling circuit for optimally controlling a wavelength dispersion value of the variable dispersion compensator based on the bit error information from the bit error information monitoring circuit.

TL;DR: In this article, the mode coupling parameters between the orthogonally polarized HE 11 modes are compared for various kinds of waveguide imperfections and ambient fluctuations in the stress-applied single polarization fibers.
Abstract: Mode coupling effects caused by waveguide imperfections and ambient fluctuations in the stress-applied single polarization fibers have been investigated. Several origins of mode coupling, such as: 1) core deformations, 2) deformation of stress-applying parts, 3) micro-bending, and 4) temperature fluctuations, have been treated. The mode coupling parameters between the orthogonally polarized HE 11 modes are compared for various kinds of waveguide imperfections and ambient fluctuations. It was clarified that the deformation of the stress-applying parts is the dominant factor in the mode coupling effects in stress-applied single polarization fibers.
