TL;DR: Investigation of the ionic transport behavior in SPEs based on poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) and its co-polymer with ε-caprolactone (CL) via both experimental and computational approaches results in confirmation of a preferential Li(+)-carbonyl oxygen atom coordination, with a preference in coordination to the ester based monomers.
Abstract: Among the alternative host materials for solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), polycarbonates have recently shown promising functionality in all-solid-state lithium batteries from ambient to elevated temperatures. While the computational and experimental investigations of ion conduction in conventional polyethers have been extensive, the ion transport in polycarbonates has been much less studied. The present work investigates the ionic transport behavior in SPEs based on poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) and its co-polymer with epsilon-caprolactone (CL) via both experimental and computational approaches. FTIR spectra indicated a preferential local coordination between Li+ and ester carbonyl oxygen atoms in the P(TMC20CL80) co-polymer SPE. Diffusion NMR revealed that the co-polymer SPE also displays higher ion mobilities than PTMC. For both systems, locally oriented polymer domains, a few hundred nanometers in size and with limited connections between them, were inferred from the NMR spin relaxation and diffusion data. Potentiostatic polarization experiments revealed notably higher cationic transference numbers in the polycarbonate based SPEs as compared to conventional polyether based SPEs. In addition, MD simulations provided atomic-scale insight into the structure-dynamics properties, including confirmation of a preferential Li+-carbonyl oxygen atom coordination, with a preference in coordination to the ester based monomers. A coupling of the Li-ion dynamics to the polymer chain dynamics was indicated by both simulations and experiments.

TL;DR: In this paper, the requirements for the development of toughening in the ductile/brittle systems are discussed, and the miniature evaluation system gave the same results as those from the conventional methods.
Abstract: Studies on plastic alloys consisting of particles of brittle polymers dispersed in the matrices of ductile polymers were undertaken using the miniature polymer evaluation system (CSI Mini-Max System). For the polycarbonate/poly(acrylonitrileco-styrene) system, which had been found to show improved impact strength by Kurauchi, et al. using the conventional methods of molding and mechanical testing, it was verified that the miniature evaluation system gave the same results as those from the conventional methods. Ten other different combinations of ductile and brittle polymers were evaluated by using the miniature evaluation system. Among them the polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate) system is found to be a toughened alloy. From these results, the requirements for the development of toughening in the ductile/brittle systems are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, two crystallization exotherms were observed for quenched samples, which is interpreted as polyester crystallization from two separate phases, one richer in this component than the other.
Abstract: Melt blends of bisphenol A polycarbonate with poly(butylene terephthalate) were studied by DTA and dynamic mechanical behavior to determine their state of miscibility. Both techniques showed multiple glass transitions indicative of incomplete miscibility in the amorphous phase. However, these transitions in some cases did not correspond to those in the pure components and varied with overall blend composition in some instances. This indicates that there are amorphous phases containing both components, i.e., partial miscibility. This view was supported by the crystallization behavior of the polyester. Two crystallization exotherms were observed for quenched samples, which is interpreted as polyester crystallization from two separate phases, one richer in this component than the other. Other interpretations of these results are discussed.

TL;DR: A blend of polycarbonates of dihydroxydiphenyl cycloalkanes and optionally 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol with polyesters from terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, having the advantage of being colorless and providing an unexpected amount of impact strength, hardness and heat resistance.
Abstract: A blend of polycarbonates of dihydroxydiphenyl cycloalkanes and optionally 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol with polyesters from terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol, having the advantage of being colorless and providing an unexpected amount of impact strength, hardness and heat resistance. The polymer blends are especially suitable for the manufacture of clear molded articles, fibers, sheeting, and film.

TL;DR: In this article, the mesoporous TiO2 films were compared with either a film prepared from a commercial photocatalyst (Sachtleben Hombikat UV-100), SG-TiO2, or Pilkington Glass ActivTM by the determination of their photonic efficiencies for degradation of methylene blue and the photoinduced surface wettability.
Abstract: SiO2 film precoating is found to be very effective for the protection of polycarbonate (PC) as a typical example for heat-sensitive substrate materials, thus preventing its photodegradation under UV light. Subsequently, transparent photoactive mesoporous TiO2 and Sachtleben Hombikat UV100 thin film coatings on SiO2/PC have been developed for self-cleaning applications. The newly prepared photocatalysts films have been compared with either a film prepared from a commercial photocatalyst (Sachtleben Hombikat UV-100), SG-TiO2, or Pilkington Glass ActivTM by the determination of their photonic efficiencies for degradation of methylene blue and the photoinduced surface wettability. The efficiency of the photocatalytic reactions was found to be about three times higher in the case of the mesoporous TiO2 films compared with films prepared from UV-100 or Pilkington Glass ActivTM. This is the first report focusing on the synthesis of mesoporous TiO2 films on polycarbonate substrates, and, to the best of our knowle...
