Abstract: Summary The dormancy found in fresh nuts of Polygonum convolvulus L., which persists in nuts stored dry in the laboratory, and their germination has been studied. Methods of breaking this dormancy by means of low temperature treatment and by the use of gibberellic acid, thiourea, uracil, thymine, adenine, guanine and cytosine are described. A method of recording germination ability which weights the rapid germination necessary for the establishment of this species in nature has been used. Mechanisms of the dormancy and dormancy-breaking are discussed.
