TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of polygonum multiflorum Thunb and Baek Hasuo (Cynanchi wilfordii Radix, CW) root extracts.
Abstract: The objective of this research was to investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Jeok Hasuo (Polygonum multiflorum Thunb., PM) and Baek Hasuo (Cynanchi wilfordii Radix, CW) root extracts. Total phenolic contents of PM and CW root extracts were determined and the antioxidant activities of the root extracts were determined by scavenging activity of diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. The antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes were determined and expressed as the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The disc diffusion method was also used to determine the zone of inhibition. The butanol extracts of PM and CW roots exhibited greater total phenolic contents (1,212.6 and 1,454.5 mg/g GAE, respectively) than those of ethanol and water extracts. The ethanol (89.0%) and butanol extracts (88.9%) of PM exhibited significantly greater DPPH radical scavenging activities than that of water extracts (73.1%) (p<0.05). Only ethanol extract exhibited an MIC of 0.8 mg/mL against both bacteria. Zones of inhibition started to form when the concentration of extract was greater than 5 mg/disc. The diameters of the zone of inhibition of PM and CW were measured to be 8.9 and 9.2 mm against S. aureus and P. acnes, respectively, exhibiting the greatest antimicrobial activities among the extracts. This research demonstrated that the PM and CW root extracts possessed not only antioxidant activity but also strong antimicrobial activity against skin-related bacteria.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated chemical constituents of Caulis polygoni multiflori and identified nine compounds from the stem of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb, including physcion(1),questin(2),2,5-dimethyl-7-hydroxychromone(3),emodin(4),catechin(5),physcion-8-O-β-D-glucopyranosideglucopeyside(6),torachrysone(7),motorachrys
Abstract: Objective To investigate chemical constituents of Caulis Polygoni Multiflori the stem of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. Methods Multi-chromatographic methods were used for the isolation and purification.Structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical evidences and spectroscopic data analysis. Results Nine compounds were isolated from Caulis Polygoni Multiflori and identified as physcion(1),questin(2),2,5-dimethyl-7-hydroxychromone(3),emodin(4),catechin(5),physcion-8-O-β-D-glucopyranosideglucopyranoside(6),torachrysone-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(7),emodin-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(8),2,3,5,4′-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(9).Conclusions Compounds 3 and 7 are isolated from Caulis Polygoni Multiflori for the first time.

TL;DR: The morphology of fruits in 16 species, one variety and one form of Polygonum sect.
Abstract: The morphology of fruits in 16 species, one variety and one form of Polygonum sect. Polygonum from China was studied under stereoscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fruits were observed heterocarpic in five species of the annuals of Polygonum sect. Polygonum, viz., shorter fruits (shorter or sub-equal to persistent perianths) vs. longer fruits (obviously longer than persistent perianths). Based on morphology of achene surface, fruits of Polygonum sect. Polygonum can be divided into two types: (1) achenes smooth and shiny, but not tuberculate or verrucate; (2) achenes scabrous, but not or slightly shiny, tuberculate or verrucate. The first type includes two subtypes: (1) achenes shallowly waved, e.g., P. cognatum, P. argyrocoleum and P. acerosum; (2) achenes with irregular hollows or stellate plications, e.g., P. plebeium, P. polycnemoides and P. shiheziense. The second type includes four subtypes: (1) achenes irregularly verrucate, e.g., P. intramongolicum; (2) achenes with scattered tubercules, e.g., P. humifusum and the shorter fruits of P. patulum; (3) achenes with tubercules standing in a queue, e.g., P. aviculare, P. tachengense and shorter fruits of P. urumqiense; (4) achenes with tubercules scattered in upper part and hollows or stellate plications in lower part, e.g., the longer fruits of P. aviculare, P. aviculare f. erectum, P. patulum and P. rigidum. The heterocarpy and micro-morphological characteristics of fruits are valuable to identify species and varieties in Section Polygonum. In this study, the systematic position of Polygonum aviculare L. var. fusco-ochreatum (Kom.) A. J. Li was determined and restated as Polygonum fusco-ochreatum Kom. and a new species, Polygonum huichunense F. Z. Li, Y. T. Hou C. Y. Qu, was described.

TL;DR: This paper summarized the research progress of chemical components and pharmacological effects of P. chinense.
Abstract: Polygonum chinense L. belongs to the genus Polygonum( Polygonaceae). The whole plant of P. chinense is commonly used as a Lingnan herbal medicine for the treatment of dysentery, sore throat and hepatitis. It is one of the main ingredients of several cold herbal tea such as"Guangdong tea","Wang-Lao-Ji",and"Twenty-four herbs". Since the nineties of last century, scientists worldwide had done a series of research work on P. chinense. This paper summarized the research progress of chemical components and pharmacological effects of P. chinense.
