TL;DR: In this paper, the antioxidant and anti-proliferative properties of polygonum plus leaf extracts were reported through sequential extraction using four solvents of varying polarities.
Abstract: The present study reports the antioxidant and anti-proliferative activities of Polygonum minus leaf extracts obtained through sequential extraction using four solvents of varying polarities (i.e. h...

TL;DR: A novel stilbene glucoside, polygonumnolide D, and a novel dianthrone glycoside,Polygonum multiflorum Thunb, were isolated from a 70% EtOH extract of the dried roots of Polygonum MultiflorumThunb together with six known compounds, which showed inhibitory activity against a-glucosidase.

TL;DR: The anti-cholinergic, cytotoxic and anti-HIV-1 activities of four sesquiterpenes, viscosumic acid, viscozulenic acid, Viscoazucine and viscoazulone, and a flavonoid glycoside, quercetin 3-O-(6″-feruloyl)-β-d-galactopyranoside, isolated from the aerial parts of Polygonum viscos
Abstract: The anti-cholinergic, cytotoxic and anti-HIV-1 activities of four sesquiterpenes, viscosumic acid, viscozulenic acid, viscoazucine and viscoazulone, and a flavonoid glycoside, quercetin 3-O-(6″-feruloyl)-β-d-galactopyranoside, isolated from the aerial parts of Polygonum viscosum have been assessed. Among these compounds, quercetin 3-O-(6″-feruloyl)-β-d-galactopyranoside exhibited significant cytotoxic activity (IC50 = 13.33 µg/mL) against the ovarian cancer cell line (OVCAR-3), anti-HIV-1 activity (IC50 = 25.61 µg/mL) and mild anti-cholinergic activity. Only one sesquiterpene, viscoazulone, showed anti-HIV-1 activity (IC50 = 33.13 µg/mL).

TL;DR: Results showed that Polygonum avicular induced cytotoxicity in MCF-7 cell line at concentrations higher than 300 ng/µl and this was confirmed by the highest rate of cell death as measured by Trypan Blue and MTT assays.
Abstract: Background and the purpose of the study: One of the most common malignancies in women is breast cancer. Although several treatments for breast cancer are available, application of herbal medicine as a supplementary treatment is a new option to help curing the disease. In this study anticancer effects of Polygonum avicular herbal extract was investigated. Methods: Polygonum avicular extract was obtained by methanol. MCF-7 cell line was treated with different concentrations of Polygonum avicular (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300,350 400 ng/µl) for different time lengths ( 6, 12, 24, and 48 hrs). MTT assay and Flow Cytometry were used to evaluate cell proliferation and apoptosis, respectively. RT-PCR was also carried out to evaluate the expression of apoptotic genes. Results and Discussion: Results showed that Polygonum avicular induced cytotoxicity in MCF7 cell line at concentrations higher than 300 ng/µl and this was confirmed by the highest rate of cell death as measured by Trypan Blue and MTT assays. RT-PCR results showed up-regulation of P53 and down-regulation of Bcl-2 proteins which implied the ability of Polygonum avicular to induce apoptosis in MCF-7 cells and confirmed its anticancer property. Further studies are required to evaluate effects of the extract on other apoptotic genes.

TL;DR: The fauna, consisting of 34 species (5 orders, 15 families) that develop on the weed and 12 species that feed on Polygonum only as adults, is dominated by polyphagous, ectophagous sap- and foliage-feeding insects.
Abstract: Insect surveys of a recent Asiatic adventive, Polygonum perfoliatum L. (Polygonaceae), were conducted in southcentral Pennsylvania during 1981 through 1983. The associated insects are listed, and the phenology and known host range of selected common species are discussed. The fauna, consisting of 34 species (5 orders, 15 families) that develop on the weed and 12 species that feed on Polygonum only as adults, is dominated by polyphagous, ectophagous sap- and foliage-feeding insects; only two oligophagous species associated with other polygonaceous plants were collected. Herbivory generally was casual, and several niches on P. perfoliatum remain unfilled. The fauna is compared with that of crownvetch ( Coronilla varia L.), an introduced legume of similar growth habit that occupies similar habitats in Pennsylvania.
