Abstract: Ethanolic extracts of 61 medicinal plants used in Malaysia were screened for antiviral and cytotoxic activities Antiviral activity was tested against the herpes simplex type-1 (HSV-1) and vesicular stomatitis (VSV) viruses, and cytotoxicity was assayed using the HeLa cell line Antiviral activity against both viruses was present in the extracts from Calotropis gigantea, Costus speciosus, Eugenia michelii, Hedyotis auricularia, Mentha arvensis, Orthosiphon aristatus, Polygonum minus and Ricinus communis (MIG: 0002-01 mg/ml) The extracts from Alternanthera sessilis, Blumea chinensis, Eleusine indica, Euphorbia hirta, Freycinetia malaccensis, Leea indica and Solanum americanum were active in selectively inhibiting HSV-1 (0001-01 mg/ml) Selective activity against VSV was shown by the extracts from Acalypha indica, Bertholletia excelsa, Cerbera manghas, Codiaeum variegatum, Plectranthus amboinicus, Centella asiatica, Mirabilis jalapa, Morinda elliptica, Oenanthe javanica, Piper sarmentosum and Premna odorata (MIG: 0005-01 mg/ml) Gytotoxic activity was present in the extracts from Acalypha indica, Andrographis paniculata, Cerbera manghas, Codiaeum variegatum, Cosmos caudatus, Elephantopus scaber, Etlingera elatior, Eugenia michelii, Freycinetia malaccensis, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis,Cen~ella asiati~a, Lecythis ollaria, Mentha arvensis, Mirabilis jalapa, Morinda elliptica, Ocimum tenUlflorum, PIper sarmentosum and Polygonum minus (CD50: 0001-01 mgjml)Co-existing antiviral and cytotoxic activities were shown by Eugenia michelii, Mentha arvensis and Polygonum minus

Abstract: Phylogenetic relationships within Polygonaceae, with an emphasis on Polygonum and segregate genera (e.g., Emex, Persicaria, Polygonella), are investigated using sequence data from the chloroplast gene rbcL. The results show the currently recognized subfamilies are likely not monophyletic. Polygonum as currently recognized is paraphyletic. Three strongly supported clades of Polygonum s.l. were found. Contained within these three clades of Polygonum s.l. are representatives of Atraphaxis, Bistorta, Koenigia and Persicaria. Other strongly supported clades found are Coccoloba, Eriogonum, Fagopyrum, Rumex and Triplaris. Patterns of character evolution were studied by mapping characters onto the phylogeny. A woody habit likely evolved multiple times within the family (in Atraphaxis, Koenigia, Muehlenbeckia, Polygonella and in the ancestor to the Eriogonum–Brunnichia clade). Abstract: The root exudates fromPolygonum sachalinense in a recirculating system significantly inhibited lettuce seedling growth. The rhizomes and roots ofP. sachalinense were extracted with 80% acetone. Bioassay of the neutral-acidic fraction on the TLC agar plate showed the inhibitory activity corresponded to the two yellow pigment bands. Two orange needles were isolated and identified as anthraquinone compounds: emodin and physcion. Both compounds exhibited inhibitory activities against the seedling growth of several testing plant species. Glucosides were isolated fromP. sachalinense and were identified as emodin-1-O-β-D-glucoside and physcion-1-O-β-D-glucoside, respectively. On plant growth bioassay, these glucosides showed no phytotoxic activity against lettuce seedlings. The concentrations of emodin, physcion, and their glucosides from rhizome with roots, aerial parts, fallen leaves, and soil were determined. The rhizome with roots and fallen leaves contained emodin and physcion at relatively high concentrations. Emodin also occurs in the soil of this plant community with effective concentrations in the fall. The results indicate that these anthraquinones are responsible for the observed interference and are potent allelopathic substances.
