TL;DR: In this article, a series of blends of polybenzimidazole (PBI) with sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) at various sulfonation levels has been studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), FT-IR, and FT-Raman spectroscopy.
Abstract: Polybenzimidazole (PBI) and polysulfone (PSF) compose an immiscible polymer pair; the introduction however of functional groups such as sulfonate groups in the polymeric chain of PSF resulted in the formation of miscible blends with PBI. The miscibility behavior of a series of blends of PBI with sulfonated PSF (SPSF) at various sulfonation levels has been studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), FT-IR, and FT-Raman spectroscopy. DMA has shown that the sulfonation degree as well as blend composition controls the miscibility behavior of the studied system. In that respect, partially miscible or miscible blends were obtained when the sulfonation level is higher than 10 mol %. Since both polymers exhibit functional groups, which could participate in specific interactions, this possibility has been examined by FT-IR analysis. In absorption FT-IR spectra of PBI−SPSF specimens with high sulfonation degree and high PBI content, band shifts associated with the NH and sulfonate groups are accounted for the ind...

TL;DR: In this paper, a carrier and developer composition and a process for the preparation of carrier particles with substantially stable conductivity parameters is described, which comprises (1) providing carrier cores and a polymer mixture, (2) dry mixing the cores and the polymer mixture; (3) heating the carrier core particles and polymer mixture.
Abstract: Disclosed is a carrier and developer composition, and a process for the preparation of carrier particles with substantially stable conductivity parameters which comprises (1) providing carrier cores and a polymer mixture; (2) dry mixing the cores and the polymer mixture; (3) heating the carrier core particles and polymer mixture, whereby the polymer mixture melts and fuses to the carrier core particles; and (4) thereafter cooling the resulting coated carrier particles.

TL;DR: In this article, a materials design concept for achieving large-area, solution-coated all-polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells with stable phase separation morphology between the donor and acceptor is presented.
Abstract: The challenge of continuous printing in high-efficiency large-area organic solar cells is a key limiting factor for their widespread adoption. A materials design concept for achieving large-area, solution-coated all-polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells with stable phase separation morphology between the donor and acceptor is presented. The key concept lies in inhibiting strong crystallization of donor and acceptor polymers, thus forming intermixed, low crystallinity, and mostly amorphous blends. Based on experiments using donors and acceptors with different degree of crystallinity, the results show that microphase separated donor and acceptor domain sizes are inversely proportional to the crystallinity of the conjugated polymers. This methodology of using low crystallinity donors and acceptors has the added benefit of forming a consistent and robust morphology that is insensitive to different processing conditions, allowing one to easily scale up the printing process from a small-scale solution shearing coater to a large-scale continuous roll-to-roll (R2R) printer. Large-area all-polymer solar cells are continuously roll-to-roll slot die printed with power conversion efficiencies of 5%, with combined cell area up to 10 cm2. This is among the highest efficiencies realized with R2R-coated active layer organic materials on flexible substrate.

TL;DR: In this article, the phase behavior, miscibility, and morphology of poly(L-lactic acid) and poly(butylene succinate) blends were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle x-ray scattering techniques, and polarized optical microscopy.
Abstract: Blends of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) were prepared with various compositions by a melt-mixing method and the phase behavior, miscibility, and morphology were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering techniques, and polarized optical microscopy. The blend system exhibited a single glass transition over the entire composition range and its temperature decreased with an increasing weight fraction of the PBS component, but this depression was not significantly large. The DSC thermograms showed two distinct melting peaks over the entire composition range, indicating that these materials was classified as semicrystalline/semicrystalline blends. A depression of the equilibrium melting point of the PLA component was observed and the interaction parameter between PLA and PBS showed a negative value of −0.15, which was derived using the Flory–Huggins equation. Small-angle X-ray scattering revealed that, in the blend system, the PBS component was expelled out of the interlamellar regions of PLA, which led to a significant decrease of a long-period, amorphous layer thickness of PLA. For more than a 40% PBS content, significant crystallization-induced phase separation was observed by polarized optical microscopy. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 86: 647–655, 2002
