TL;DR: In this paper, a facile oxidative polymerization approach using p-toluene sulfonic acid as a dopant and ammonium persulfate as an oxidant was used to construct conductive polypyrrole/SiC nanocomposites.
Abstract: Conductive polypyrrole/SiC nanocomposites are fabricated via a facile oxidative polymerization approach using p-toluene sulfonic acid as a dopant and ammonium persulfate as an oxidant. The effects of the nanoparticle loading, ratio of oxidant to monomers, and nanoparticle morphology (spheres and rods) on the physicochemical properties are investigated. Various characterization methods are carried out to determine the material properties. Thermal gravimetric analysis demonstrates an improved thermal stability of polypyrrole in the polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) with a higher decomposition temperature. The glass-transition temperature and melting temperature of the polymer and its nanocomposites are determined by differential scanning calorimetry with a decreased melting temperature of polypyrrole in the PNCs. The microstructures of pure polypyrrole and PNCs are observed by scanning electron microscopy. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates the crytallinity of polypyrrole, and poor crystallinity is ...

TL;DR: In this paper, a novel nanocomposite material, PANI 0.24MoO3, comprised of poly(aniline) chains interleaved with the layers of MoO3 was developed for electrochemical lithium insertion.
Abstract: We have developed a novel nanocomposite material, [PANI]0.24MoO3, comprised of poly(aniline) chains interleaved with the layers of MoO3, using concomitant ion exchange−polymerization in the presence of an external oxidizing agent. The characterization of this material using SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, powder XRD, and thermal analysis shows that the poly(aniline) is present primarily in the emeraldine salt form. The high degree of ordering evident from the oriented film XRD patterns suggests that the PANI chains are at least partially aligned in the ac (basal) plane. The properties of the polymer nanocomposite for electrochemical lithium insertion were compared to those of the alkali molybdenum oxide using the materials as cathodes in conventional lithium cells. The polymer/oxide battery demonstrated substantially reduced cell polarization on galvanostatic cycling, compared to the alkali molybdenum oxide in the absence of PANI. The resultant enhanced ion and/or electron transport induced by incorporation of th...

TL;DR: The introduction of the PANI nanofillers was found to reduce the heat-release rate and to increase the char residue of epoxy resin and the enhanced permittivity was analyzed by the interfacial polarization.
Abstract: Both fibril and spherical polyaniline (PANI) nanostructures have successfully served as nanofillers for obtaining epoxy resin polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). The effects of nanofiller morphology and loading level on the mechanical properties, rheological behaviors, thermal stability, flame retardancy, electrical conductivity, and dielectric properties were systematically studied. The introduction of the PANI nanofillers was found to reduce the heat-release rate and to increase the char residue of epoxy resin. A reduced viscosity was observed in both types of PANI–epoxy resin liquid nanosuspension samples at lower loadings (1.0 wt % for PANI nanospheres; 1.0 and 3.0 wt % for PANI nanofibers), the viscosity was increased with further increases in the PANI loading for both morphologies. The dynamic storage and loss modulii were studied, together with the glass-transition temperature (Tg) being obtained from the peak of tan δ. The critical PANI nanofiller loading for the modulus and Tg was different, i.e., 1.0...
