Abstract: In this paper, experimental and theoretical studies performed on apex connection of an industrial portal frame constructed with cold-formed back-to-back double sigma profile rafters are presented. By those experiments performed, local buckling behavior of the apex plate and load–displacement behavior of the system were investigated under monotonic vertical loading. This investigation was conducted for conditions that the gap between rafter ends at the apex plate are 90, 180, 360, and 450 mm and apex plate is unstiffened/stiffened. Experimental results for the model with 360 mm gap were compared to those of nonlinear quasi-static finite element analyses performed using a finite element software and a good agreement between those results was observed. The connection׳s behavior is controlled by the apex plate. No significant damage occurred on the profiles after the tests. According to the results, it is sufficient to increase the gap between rafter ends up to not higher than 360 mm in order to maximize the general load carrying capacity of the system and the stability of out of plane local buckling behavior of the apex plate. Furthermore, although stiffener plate significantly restricted local buckling of apex plate, no remarkable effect of this enhancement was observed on the flexural capacity of the system.

Abstract: The invention relates to a system and a method for automatically measuring dimension and weight of a road vehicle, in particular to an integrated system and an integrated method for rapidly and dynamically measuring the length, width, height and weight of a vehicle, and aims at effectively solving the problems in overloading detection work at present. According to the system, the dimension information of the vehicle is measured in a front and back portal frames manner; the width and height information of the vehicle in a single lane is measured by combination of two two-dimensional laser radars on the front portal frame, so that the measurement problem caused by vehicle deformation can be effectively avoided; and the length information of the vehicle in the single lane is indirectly measured by virtue of a single laser radar on the rear portal frame; and starting and stopping information of the single vehicle is provided for a shaft-type weighing scale by virtue of a laser radar separation vehicle on the front portal frame. The system has the advantages of high measurement speed and high accuracy, and normal running of the vehicle is not affected.

Abstract: This paper presents analytical and numerical models for semirigid timber frame with Lagscrewbolt (LSB) connections. A series of static and reverse cyclic experimental tests were carried out for different beam sizes (400, 500, and 600 mm depth) and column–base connections with different numbers of LSBs (4, 5, 8). For the beam–column connections, with increase in beam depth, moment resistance and stiffness values increased, and ductility factor reduced. For the column–base connection, with increase in the number of LSBs, the strength, stiffness, and ductility values increased. A material model available in OpenSees, Pinching4 hysteretic model, was calibrated for all connection test results. Finally, analytical model of the portal frame was developed and compared with the experimental test results. Overall, there was good agreement with the experimental test results, and the Pinching4 hysteretic model can readily be used for full-scale structural model.

Abstract: Presented in this paper are test results to determine the moment-rotation characteristics of joint details for a portal frame specific to a pultruded fiber reinforced polymer assembly for the Startlink house. Two joints having beam-to-column dowel connections, with and without extra adhesively bonding, were statically loaded in increments of moment or rotation to ultimate failure. The floor beam and stud column members are bespoke closed-sections developed for the Startlink lightweight building system. The serviceability design calculations for the demonstrator house to be constructed in Bourne, England, assumed the frame’s joints to be rigid. Clauses in EN 1993-1-8:2005 have been applied to classify the measured rotational stiffnesses against the rigid requirement, and an evaluation is made of the modes of failure with respect to the joint’s design moments. Only the joint with extra bonding between the mating surfaces of members is found to be classified as rigid. Both joints are shown to have an acceptable joint strength.

Abstract: The invention provides a large-scale portal frame. The large-scale portal frame comprises two rails, two trolleys, two stand columns, a movable main beam and a connection beam. Two ends of the movable main beam are respectively erected on the stand columns and are connected to a lifting device. Upper ends of the two stand columns are connected by the connection beam. The large-scale portal frame also comprises at least two counterweight mechanisms, a connection beam adjustment mechanism and two suspention beams for fixing manipulators. The counterweight mechanism comprises a guide wheel group, a suspension cable and a counterweight block. The connection beam adjustment mechanism comprises at least one adjusting nut, at least one adjusting screw and an adjusting seat. The two suspention beams are symmetrically fixed to the movable main beam, one end of each one of the suspention beams is close to the center of the movable main beam and any one of the suspention beams is provided with a horizontal movement mechanism. The manipulators are connected to the suspention beams by the horizontal movement mechanisms. The large-scale portal frame satisfies span and height requirements and is suitable for 3D printing building extruding head arrangement.

Abstract: The structural response of typical, gable-end, low roof pitch industrial buildings, in a windstorm is dependent on the wind loads used in the design of cladding and the portal frame structure. Critical, structural wind load effects derived from wind loads measured on a wind tunnel model show that standards such as AS/NZS 1170.2 can produce unconservative design load effects on the heavily loaded first internal frame. This paper forms part of wider study that assesses the vulnerability of hot rolled steel, industrial buildings to wind loads. The knee and ridge bending moments and horizontal and vertical reactions at the base of the frame are the critical load effects that are used in the design of structural members and connections of these types of buildings. This study found that some of these load effects based on external pressures are under-estimated by about 30%, when the building is located in a suburban environment. A dominant windward wall opening can effectively double the design load effects, thus significantly increasing the vulnerability, especially if this scenario has not been considered by the designer.

Abstract: The assessment of the seismic performance of an old concrete bridge was conceived within the RETRO Transnational Activity funded by the SERIES research project. The installation of isolation devices -one per column- for each pier portal frame interposed between the cap beam and the deck was proposed as seismic retrofit, fully complying with Eurocode 8 requirements. A comprehensive set of hybrid simulations was conceived to simulate the dynamic response of the existing 400 m span Rio Torto Viaduct, both in the isolated and the non-isolated cases. In order to support the pseudo-dynamic test design, a refined fiber based FE model of the bridge was implemented in the well-known OpenSEES software; time history analyses highlighted appreciable nonlinearities in the dynamic response of the system under the Serviceability Limit State (SLS). As a consequence, a Numerical Substructure (NS) capable of reproducing such nonlinear behaviour was deemed necessary. Nonetheless, implementation issues relevant to the typical solving time dictated by the controller time step, made the use of complex fiber based FE models not suitable for testing purposes. In this perspective, the paper presents the design of a suitable NS, which is based on a rational and nonlinear reduction of the aforementioned OpenSEES Reference Model (RM). Moreover, in order to impose a consistent degradation of physical and numerical piers, a testing procedure based on recursive identification and model updating sessions is proposed. The numerical tools and simulations developed in the project are presented and discussed.

Abstract: The invention relates to a shelf type non-avoiding 3D parking device. The device comprises a supporting guide rail, a pallet, and a driving assembly which drives the pallet to move, rotate and lift, wherein the driving assembly is arranged on the supporting guide rail and can move along the supporting guide rail; a portal frame for bearing the pallet is arranged beside the inner side of the driving assembly and is static relative to the supporting guide rail; the rear part of the driving assembly is guided in match with the portal frame. According to the parking device, a landing portal frame is arranged and firmly fixed on the ground, the driving assembly is synchronously guided in match with the supporting guide rail and the portal frame, thus the stability of the device can be greatly improved, the good inclining effect is positioned, and the wear of part due to the deformation of the device can be effectively reduced; meanwhile, when the pallet is positioned above, the pallet can be positioned and borne through the portal frame, so that a lifting mechanism can be avoided being in a full-load state for a long term, and the service life can be prolonged.

Abstract: This paper describes a non-linear finite element study into the effects of elevated temperature on a cold-formed steel portal frame having semi-rigid joints. Numerical modelling was carried out using ABAQUS finite element analysis software with shell elements used to capture localised buckling effects. Results for the ambient shell models are compared against previous full-scale tests. Material properties are taken from the literature, in order to predict the behaviour of the frame at elevated temperature. The results of finite element beam models are compared against those of shell models to enable comparison. At elevated temperature, shell models are shown to detect failure much earlier within the fire. Therefore shell models are recommended for such studies, for a conservative approach.

Abstract: The invention relates to a vertical shears-fork type yielding-free stereo garage which comprises shears-fork mechanisms on the two sides of a parking space. The rear end of the parking space is provided with a four-stand-column portal frame. A winding plant on the four-stand-column portal frame pulls and lifts a rotary disk bracket through a steel rope, and therefore an automobile tray can ascend and descend. A small rail car is arranged below the four-stand-column portal frame. A small rail car motor driving mechanism horizontally moves on a rail. The shears-fork mechanisms are provided with ground pulleys. The rotary disk bracket is arranged on the upper portion. The automobile tray is attached to the upper portion of the rotary disk bracket. The rotary disk bracket and the portal frame achieve locked protection through an electromagnetic pin. By means of the vertical shears-fork type yielding-free stereo garage, stereoscopic parking can be achieved in two layers of stereo garages in the mode that the bottom layer of stereo garage can be free of yielding, structure stress is relatively reasonable, a hoist rope chain system or a hydraulic system can be used as a driving source, various power sources can be provided, interference is not likely to be formed, and vertical shears-fork type yielding-free stereo garage is safe and reliable.
