Abstract: This paper presents an application of a passive control strategy in a base-excited two-degrees-of-freedom portal frame support structure considering extract energy using a piezoelectric material coupled to a column. The 2:1 (two-to-one) internal resonance is set between the vertical and horizontal coordinates, resulting in a phenomenon known as saturation. This phenomenon transfers partial vibratory mechanical energy from vertical to horizontal mode, making possible to extract energy from the columns. The idea is to tune the vibration of the structure, in order to improve the energy harvesting, and this is performed through a passive controller that is a nonlinear-energy sink device, i.e., the proposed device is a mass-spring-damper that plays a role of tuning the vertical and horizontal displacements, and, as consequence, improving the energy harvesting. The numerical results depicted the best configuration of the controller device, which aims to improve the energy harvesting, whose piezoelectric material is used as a means of low-power energy transduction.

The workbench comprises a base steel sheet, a Y-axis transmission mechanism and workpiece guide rails, wherein the Y-axis transmission mechanism is arranged at the lower end of the base steel sheet and drives the base steel sheet to move back and forth, and the workpiece guide rails are arranged at the upper end of the base steel sheet and are used for mounting workpieces. The portal frame comprises two stand columns opposite to each other, a beam fixed to the upper ends of the stand columns, a Z-axis transmission mechanism for driving the AC-axis device to move up and down and an X-axis transmission mechanism arranged at the front end of the beam and drives the Z-axis transmission mechanism to move leftwards and rightwards. The laser engraving machine is high in laser engraving efficiency, free of burr, environmentally friendly, free of pollution, low in noise, free of cutter abrasion and beneficial to simplification of overall equipment of a numerically control center, through a planer type milling machine composed of the workbench, the portal frame and the electrical control system, the cutter is flexible to move, the work range is wide, and limitation of the work space is avoided.

Abstract: Uneven exposure to eg solar radiation can cause temperature differences between various structural parts of a bridge, which leads to tensile stresses if the parts cannot move freely In this study, thermal simulations and stress calculations on a model of a portal frame bridge are performed with the aim of evaluating the temperature difference between the bridge parts It is shown that the temperature difference between parts which is proposed by Eurocode 1 is overestimated, thus the resulting stress distribution being unrealistic Using the design method proposed by Eurocode 1 is therefore likely to exaggerate the required reinforcement in crack width limit design, which in turn would lead to unnecessary costs and environmental impacts Further studies are needed in order to determine proper thermal load values and temperature distributions

Abstract: In seismically active regions, the use of timber–reinforced concrete (RC) hybrid construction can overcome the structural limitations that occur with timber construction. This paper investigates three connections used in the timber frame–RC core hybrid system: (1) RC wall-timber beam connection, (2) timber column-base connection, and (3) timber beam-timber column connection. A series of monotonic and reverse-cyclic loading tests were conducted on three replicate connections. Salient features of each connection (i.e., stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation) were computed from the monotonic loading test results and were used to set the backbone curve of the analytical Pinching4 hysteretic model. Furthermore, the Pinching4 hysteretic models were calibrated with the reverse-cyclic loading test results. Utility of the Pinching4 hysteretic models was shown with performance prediction of a portal frame test. Abstract: Cold-formed steel (CFS) portal frames can be a viable alternative to conventional hot-rolled steel portal frames. They are commonly used for low-rise commercial, light industrial and agricultural buildings. In this paper, the effect of stressed-skin action on the optimum design of CFS portal frames is investigated by conducting a minimum cost design optimisation on a building of span of 6 m, height-to-eaves of 3 m and frame spacing of 3 m; the effect of different number of bays are considered. For the purpose of this study, it is assumed that gables are rigid.The effect of stressed-skin action is larger for“square-shaped” buildings (i.e. when the span and length are the same on plan) and decreases as more bays are added(i.e. as the building becomes more “rectangular-shaped” on plan). The results of the minimum cost optimisation indicate that if stressed-skin action is taken into account, the cost of the internal frame can be reduced by around half for “square-shaped” buildings. It should be noted that this is a minimum cost optimisation, which is not the same as a minimum weight optimisation. It is also shown that a safe design of internal frames could be obtained by ignoring wind loads (i.e. designing the frame only for gravity loads),but this is limited to buildings having a “square-shape”.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to study the restraining effect in fire resistance of framed structures and to evaluate the global response of reinforced concrete frames when exposed to fire based on advanced finite element method. To study the response a single portal frame is analyzed. The effect of floor slab on this frame is studied by modeling a beam-column-slab assembly. The evolution of temperature distribution, internal stresses and deformations of the frame subjected to ISO 834 standard fire curve for both the frames are studied. The thermal and structural responses are evaluated and a comparison of results of individual members and entire structure is done. From the study it can be seen that restraining forces has significant influence on both stresses and deflection and overall response of the structure when compared to individual structural member. Among the various structural elements, columns are the critical members in fire and failure of column causes the failure of entire structure. The fire rating of various structural elements of the frame is determined by various failure criteria and is compared with IS456 2000 tabulated fire rating.

Abstract: This paper presents the design of industrial portal frames with plain carbon steel (S275) and micro-alloyed Fire Resistant (FR) steel, coated with intumescent paint as fire protection for the structure. The coating improves the overall heat resistance of the metallic structure. The portal frames with different spans were calculated to observe their fire behavior. The structure was dimensioned by estimating the stresses to which each particular structural section was subjected and by selecting the most economic combination. The process was then repeated with the new dimensions to reach an optimal structural design. The key variables analyzed in this study are: five different spans, seven intumescent paint thicknesses, and eleven price ratios between the FR and the S275 steels, considering a fire exposure time of 45 minutes in all of the scenarios under study. The main conclusion was that the use of FR combined with S275 and the intumescent paint system was the most profitable option. In many cases, the better performance of this combination offered the most technically feasible option for the design of portal frame steel structures.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a full-scale site fire test performed on a cold-formed steel portal frame building with semi-rigid joints. The purpose of the study is to establish a performance-based approach for the design of such structures in fire boundary conditions. In the full-scale site fire test, the building collapsed asymmetrically at a temperature of 714°C. A non-linear elasto-plastic finite-element shell model is described and is validated against the results of the full-scale test. A parametric study is presented that highlights the importance of in-plane restraint from the side rails in preventing an outwards sway failure for both a single portal and full building geometry model. The study also demonstrates that the semi-rigidity of the joints should be taken into account in the design. The single portal and full building geometry models display a close match to site test results with failure at 682°C and 704°C, respectively. The installing tool comprises a truss, guide carrier rollers, a portal frame and an electric block. The portal frame is a rectangular frame structure formed from I-beams; the portal frame is arranged on a roof; the electric block is arranged at the top end of the portal frame; the truss is arranged on the roof after penetrating the portal frame. Each guide carrier roller comprises a pedestal and two roller wheels used for carrying and conveying pipes; the pedestal is fixedly arranged on the truss and the two roller wheels are arranged at the two ends of the pedestal; the distance between the two roller wheels is less than the diameter of the pipes. The truss penetrates pipe supports on the roof; the two roller wheels of each guide carrier roller are higher than the pipe supports on the roof; the roof is provided with a lifting opening at the portal frame. The problem in maintenance and installation of pipes on roofs that a hoist cannot be used at a large-span factory and the periphery thereof for hoisting is solved; the installing tool and the installing method have no influence on production in the factory.

Abstract: In recent years, there has been a considerable increase in perceived risks of blast loading attacks or similar incidents on structures. Blast design is therefore a necessary aspect of the design for building structures globally and as such building design must adapt accordingly. Presented herein is an attempt to determine the numerical response of a seismically designed single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to blast loading. The SDOF model in the form of a portal frame was designed to withstand a typical seismic occurrence in Northern Trinidad. Blast loads caused by applying a 500 kg charge weight of TNT at standoff distances of 45 m, 33 m, and 20 m were then applied to the model. The blast loading on the frame was determined using empirical methods. The analytical study showed that the seismically designed SDOF plane frame model entered the plastic region during the application of the blast load occurring up to the critical standoff distance.

According to the integral traversing system disclosed by the invention, as the steel wheels are installed at a lower part of a conventional full space support, a well-installed portal-type full space support can be recycled, one-time support disassembly and assembly can be avoided, so that construction process can be accelerated, and materials can be saved, and the integral traversing system according to the invention has the advantages of convenience for installation and simplicity in operation, and can be widely applied to the construction field of box girders.
