Abstract: The use of small diameter whole-culm (bars) and/or split bamboo (a.k.a. splints or round strips) has often been proposed as an alternative to relatively expensive reinforcing steel in reinforced concrete. The motivation for such replacement is typically cost—bamboo is readily available in many tropical and sub-tropical locations, whereas steel reinforcement is relatively more expensive—and more recently, the drive to find more sustainable alternatives in the construction industry. This review addresses such ‘bamboo-reinforced concrete’ and assesses its structural and environmental performance as an alternative to steel reinforced concrete. A prototype three bay portal frame, that would not be uncommon in regions of the world where bamboo-reinforced concrete may be considered, is used to illustrate bamboo reinforced concrete design and as a basis for a life cycle assessment of the same. The authors conclude that, although bamboo is a material with extraordinary mechanical properties, its use in bamboo-reinforced concrete is an ill-considered concept, having significant durability, strength and stiffness issues, and does not meet the environmentally friendly credentials often attributed to it.

Abstract: This paper reports the results of an investigation on the use of Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) to analyse the vibration behaviour of thin-walled steel frames. After an overview of the main concepts and procedures involved in performing a GBT vibration analysis, the formulation and implementation of a GBT-based beam finite element are presented, namely the determination of the finite element and frame linear stiffness and mass matrices (incorporating the influence frame joint configurations). Finally, in order to illustrate the application and capabilities of the proposed GBT-based finite element formulation, numerical results concerning the local, distortional and global vibration behaviour of (i) a symmetric portal frame and (ii) an “L-shaped” frame exhibiting four commonly used joint configurations are presented and discussed. For validation purposes, some GBT results (frequency values and vibration mode shapes) are compared with values yielded by A nsys shell finite element analyses .

Abstract: This paper focuses on discrete sizing optimization of frame structures using commercial profile catalogs. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem by including the equations of structural analysis as constraints. The internal forces of the members are taken as continuous state variables. Binary variables are used for choosing the member profiles from a catalog. Both the displacement and stress constraints are formulated such that for each member limit values can be imposed at predefined locations along the member. A valuable feature of the formulation, lacking in most contemporary approaches, is that global optimality of the solution is guaranteed by solving the MILP using branch-and-bound techniques. The method is applied to three design problems: a portal frame, a two-story frame with three load cases and a multiple-bay multiple-story frame. Performance profiles are determined to compare the MILP reformulation method with a genetic algorithm.

Abstract: Semi-rigidness of the joint connections is one of the main characteristics of timber structures. The pin-joint assumption for the semi-rigid joint connections might be not conservative in the timber structural design. In this paper, structural analysis was conducted on a semi-rigid timber portal frame; the formulas were derived in terms of the internal force and the lateral stiffness, and the influence of the semi-rigid connections was discussed. Moreover, experimental tests were performed on three full-scale timber portal frames and five bolted timber connections to study the lateral performance of the frames and the moment resistance of the connections. For consistency, the connections from the portal frames and the connections for bending tests were of the same configuration. Finally, a calculation flowchart of the lateral performance on a semi-rigid frame was presented to verify the derived formulas and to show a framework of the lateral structural design process.

Abstract: Previous studies on stressed skin effect of industrial steel buildings showed discrepancies between the ECCS formulae and experimental results. To clarify the discrepancies full-scale experimental test program was planned and executed by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Department of Structural Engineering. The aims of the full-scale tests were to refine the stressed skin design method and to adjust it to the nonstandard cladding structural system applied by an industrial partner. During execution of the full-scale experiments the shear flexibility of those industrially applied nonstandard diaphragms were examined, where the application of seam fasteners were rejected. Next to the building section a loading frame was built, so that tension and compression force could be applied to each frame, in order to examine the in-plane shear flexibility of the whole nonstandard diaphragm assembly, including the shear flexibility of the portal frame. In the test series four purlin and two trapezoidal sheeting height configurations were combined in more than 100 tests. This paper, denoted as Part I shows the test setup and introduces the results derived from the ECCS formulae, underlining the importance of extending the applicability of the current design formulae to nonstandard cases, which are often applied in industrial practice all over Europe. A companion paper (Part II) presents the comparative results between the various cladding configurations, also the main conclusions regarding the stiffening effect of the applied diaphragm configurations, and reports the effect of change in section size to shear flexibility. Besides this in Part II the effect of different structural components in regards to shear flexibility is underlined.

Abstract: Cold-formed steel haunched portal frames are popular structures in industrial and housing applications. They are mostly used as sheds, garages, and shelters, and are common in rural areas. Cold-formed steel portal frames with spans of up to 30 m are now being constructed in Australia. As they are relatively new to the market, current design recommendations are fairly limited. In the specific frame system analyzed herein, the column is partially restrained against twist rotation at an intermediate point where the knee brace joining the column and rafter is connected. An experimental program was carried out on a series of portal frame systems composed of back-to-back channels for the columns and rafters. It was found that changing the knee brace and knee brace-to-column connection bracket significantly affected the buckling capacity of the column, however this was not captured in design calculations. In order to correctly predict frame behavior and ultimate loads for design purposes, the column buckling capacity must be accurately calculated. This paper presents an energy method approach to calculate the buckling load of a column with an intermediate elastic torsional restraint. Various end conditions of the column are considered including column base semi-rigidity, as well as multiple loading conditions. Displacement functions are determined based on measured experimental data. The Southwell and Meck plot methods to determine column buckling loads are discussed. The column buckling loads determined from the plot methods and calculated by the energy analysis are compared to the experimental column buckling loads. It is shown that the energy method outlined herein predicts the buckling load within 6% for columns with an intermediate elastic torsional restraint.

The device comprises a machine frame, a portal frame, a moving mechanism, a wire winding-unwinding mechanism and a clamping mechanism; the portal frame is installed on the machine frame through the moving mechanism and driven to do linear reciprocating motion on the machine frame; the portal frame is provided with a lifting part and a cutting head installed on the lifting part; the wire winding-unwinding mechanism is installed at one end of the machine frame and connected with the cutting head through a cutting wire; and the clamping mechanism is arranged on the machine frame. The method and device for cutting the silicon core trimmings into the finished silicon core productsare high in working efficiency, small in loss, capable of reducing energy consumption and high in silicon rod utilization rate.

Abstract: Summary As one key to the implementation of the performance-based design methodologies for wood structures, the performance objectives and their corresponding limit state criteria are usually correlated with the peak (maximum) interstory drift demands. This paper evaluates the inelastic drift demands including the peak drift and the residual drift for the prototype timber portal frame structural elements. Analytical 2D-framed model representative of the study-case were subjected to a suite of 50 pulse-type earthquake ground motions. In addition, an accumulated damage index is added to the inputs of the nonlinear analyses to account for the damage caused by the previous ground excitations. Larger accumulated damages lead to larger inelastic drifts. Strong correlation is revealed among the drift demands, the peak ground accelerations, and the variables characterizing the nonlinear system behavior. Finally, estimation formulas for the peak and residual drift demands are proposed and validated with the simulated results from nonlinear time-history analyses. Based on the presented formulas, the resilience ratio and the effective elastic drift are further derived to comprehend the nonlinear behavior of such timber made structures.

Abstract: In this study, the nonlinear static Pushover analyses of a reinforced concrete portal frame are obtained by using Fiber element method based on displacement. For calculating of cyclic behavior of concrete, the Mander-Priestley-Park model is used. Cyclic behavior of the reinforcement is obtained by using MengottoPinto steel model. Different longitudinal reinforcement ratios are selected for investigating effect on the nonlinear behavior of a portal frame under horizontal forces. Concrete mean strength is 20 MPa and confinement factor is 1.2. The yield strength of reinforcement model is 420 MPa. Obtained results are evaluated with regard to the top displacement-base shear force and top rotation-base moment. The lateral load capacities and the overturning moment capacities obtained from 2, 3, 4 and 5 cases were calculated more between 81-200% and 101-286% than 1 case, respectively. As a results, it is determined that the lateral load capacity and the overturning moment capacity increase depending on increasing of longitudinal reinforcement ratio in columns.

Abstract: In order to perform a reassessment of existing structures or design new structures in a more efficient and economical way non-linear finite element (NLFE) models are used to take into account all non-linear behavior in reinforced concrete structures. The Model Code 2010 (fib, 2012) suggest several safety formats to perform non-linear finite element analyses with an intended reliability index β_R=3.04. The safety formats seems to be safe for statically determinate structures with a predictable failure mode. For instance a bending failure in a simply supported reinforced concrete beam. However it is unclear if the intended safety level is met for statically indeterminate structures. Since the redundancy of the structural system and the several possibilities to redistribute the internal forces could lead to unpredictable failure modes. In this thesis three reinforced concrete portal frame designs are used to evaluate the probability of failure of the structural resistance determined with the safety formats i.e. the safety of the safety formats will be assessed. The ductility of the portal frame designs determines the degree of redistribution of the internal forces. Therefore this case study will focus on three portal frame designs with all a different ductile behavior. The global design resistance is determined according to the following safety formats: the global resistance factor method (GRFm), the estimation of a coefficient of variation (ECOV) method and the partial factor method (PFm). A comparison is made with the local design resistance of the portal frame designs according to the Eurocode 2 using partial safety factors. The reliability level of the structural design resistance according to the least conservative safety formats is determined for each portal frame design. Several response surfaces were constructed and the first order reliability method (FORM) was used to determine the reliability level. In case of relatively low material and geometrical uncertainties the safety formats lead to a structural resistance that can safely be used i.e. the intended reliability level is met. However when the detailing uncertainties in concrete frame corners are relatively large these uncertainties should be implemented in the safety formats. Further research and more experimental results are needed to make a better estimation of the (model) uncertainties possible. Finally, the used methods are evaluated and several comments are given on the difficulties of using those methods. Constructing a response surface in combination with the FORM in order to find the design point is definitely not an automated process as the mathematical procedures seems to indicate.
