Abstract: Portal frame structures, made up of cold-formed steel trusses, are increasingly being used for lightweight building construction. A novel pin-jointed moment connector, called the Howick Rivet Connector (HRC), was developed and tested previously in T-joints and truss assemblage to determine its reliable strength, stiffness and moment resisting capacity. This paper presents an experimental study on the HRC, in moment resisting cold-formed steel trusses. The connection method is devised where intersecting truss members are confined by a gusset connected by HRCs to create a rigid moment connection. In total, three large scale experiments were conducted to determine the elastic capacity and cyclic behaviour of the gusseted truss moment connection comprising HRC connectors. Theoretical failure loads were also calculated and compared against the experimental failure loads. Results show that the HRCs work effectively at carrying high shear loads between the members of the truss, enabling rigid behaviour to be developed and giving elastic behaviour without tilting up to a defined yield point. An extended gusset connection has been proposed to maximize the moment carrying capacity in a truss knee connection using the HRCs, in which they are aligned around the perimeter of the gusset to maximize the moment capacity and to increase the stability of the truss knee joint.

Abstract: In recent years, more researches on structural reliability theory and methods have been carried out. In this study, a portal steel frame is considered. The reliability analysis for the frame is represented by the probability of failure, P_f, and the reliability index, β, that can be predicted based on the failure of the girders and columns. The probability of failure can be estimated dependent on the probability density function of two random variables, namely Capacity R, and Demand Q. The Monte Carlo simulation approach has been employed to consider the uncertainty the parameters of R, and Q. Matlab functions have been adopted to generate pseudo-random number for considered parameters. Although the Monte Carlo method is active and is widely used in reliability research, it has a disadvantage which represented by the requirement of large sample sizes to estimate the small probabilities of failure. This is leading to computational cost and time. Therefore, an Approximated Monte Carlo simulation method has been adopted for this issue. In this study, four performances have been considered include the serviceability deflection limit state, ultimate limit state for girder, ultimate limit state for the columns, and elastic stability. As the portal frame is a statically indeterminate structure, therefore bending moments, and axial forces cannot be determined based on static alone. A finite element parametric model has been prepared using Abaqus to deal with this aspect. The statistical analysis for the results samples show that all response data have lognormal distribution except of elastic critical buckling load which has a normal distribution.

Abstract: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the shear resistance of portal frame fabricated with bamboo and steel rebar by following experimental and numerical approaches. In support of sustainable construction, bamboo stripes were utilized as a partial replacement of steel rebar at tension zone of members that are subjected to lateral loading. The performance of nominal portal frame, which are fabricated with steel reinforcement was compared to the portal frames having several replacements of steel reinforcement with bamboo, in terms of seismic resistance and lateral load capacity. The experimental data was correlated based on software analysis using ABAQUS. The partial replacement of steel with bamboo under tension zone of the beams in portal frame was found to be highly effective, and also that the flexural rigidity of the partial bamboo reinforced frame was slightly higher than the nominal portal frame. This study provides insight on the possibility of reinforcing structural members with bamboo, when lateral loading is imminent on the structure.

Abstract: This paper presents the damage identification results of an experimentally tested half-scale reinforced concrete portal frame using the sensitivity-based finite element model updating method. Progressively increasing story drifts are imposed on the frame by a displacement-controlled hydraulic actuator using single-cycle quasi-static lateral loading along the frame’s in-plane direction. System identification is performed using an output-only system identification method at different damage levels. Dynamic tests used for system identification are conducted using an electro-dynamic shaker. The objective function used for damage identification is constructed by the difference between the experimentally identified and numerically predicted modal parameters. Damage identification is performed in two steps: (1) The initial numerical model is updated to obtain a reference model using the modal parameters corresponding to the undamaged frame and (2) the reference model is updated for increasing damage levels using the modal parameters corresponding to these levels to identify existence of damage, its location and extent. The condition of the optimization problem is improved by reducing the number of design parameters. Damage identification results are presented in terms of stiffness reduction factors assigned to the column(s) bottom and beam ends and they correlate very well with the visual damage inspections done during the quasi-static tests.

Construction preparation and basic treatment are conducted; track beamsupports are arranged and reinforced; track beams are placed; the track beams are arranged in two columns on steel buttresses and fixed through bolts; a portal frame traveling mechanism is placed, anda portal frame is mounted; a hydraulic hoisting device is mounted and arranged; a hoisting device is perfected and debugged; a stator is unloaded and steered; the hydraulic hoisting device is arranged again; the stator is hoisted in position; and hoisting equipment is dismounted. Abstract: A large number of structures have been built during or after the construction of a house or residential-zoned building, which are not built at the same time and/or integrally with the structural integrity of the residential dwelling. These include carports, pergolas, sheds, and barns. The typical method of constructing these structures is a general timber truss and column system. The aim of this study is to look at the feasibility and economic incentive that may be gained from using a timber portal frame system, similar to the steel or timber portal frames used for larger industrial constructions, over the traditional timber truss and column arrangement. In this study, designs for three cases of timber truss and timber portals were carried out using industry appropriate methods and standards. Using the design information and data gathered through talks with industry professionals, both methods of construction were compared on cost and overall time duration. From the comparison of the truss and portal designs, the use of timber portal frames over timber truss systems proved to have advantage in relation to overall cost and man power involved. This could certainly affect the current attitude towards the construction of small residential buildings in the future.

The portal frame is installed on the middle frame of a belt conveyor. The beam is welded tothe middle of the portal frame. The linear light source emitter is fixed to the middle position of the beam. The high-frequency cameras are respectively installed at the two ends of the beam. The speed measuring trolley is installed on the return section of the conveyor. A signal output cable is connected to the image analysis software. The image analysis software is connected to the host computer. The two cameras continuously and synchronously collect the video images of the contour of the illuminated position of the surface of the material and transmit the image data to the image analysis software and the host computer. The actual material surface contour data is calculated, and fitting and matching operation is carried out on the actual material surface contour data and the surface contour data of the belt under the condition of no load to determine the cross-section area of the material at the illuminated position. The instantaneous weight of the material is calculated by integrating time according to the material density and the belt speed. The material flow real-time detection device based on video images has a simple structure and high measurement accuracy, and adapt to weak light and other harsh working environments.

The turnover equipment includes a portal frame and a supporting pedestal; the portal frame vertically installedon the position of the two sides on the upper surface of the supporting pedestal; a lifting arm is installed on the vertical side of the portal frame through slide rails; the slide rails are respectively installed on the two sides of supports of the portal frame; the lifting arm is horizontally installed on the portal frame; the other side that the lifting arm is installed on the portal frame isspaced with the first support and the second support; and the first support is movably installed on the lifting arm through a movable disc. Through the turnover equipment installed in the middle position of an electric pile assembly line, an electric pile box can be smoothly clamped and finishes a turnover motion of 180 degrees, so that low efficiency of manual turnover can be avoided, and the speed of turnover can be accelerated; and the external structure of an electric pile box body can be accurately aligned with a pallet, so that demands of industrial mass production can be realized.
