Abstract: Administration of 25 mg/kg or 40 mg/kg of potassium dichromate or 40 mg/kg of potassium chromate resulted in a significant enhancement of N-methylnicotinamide uptake by renal cortical slices when measured 24 hours after a single subcutaneous injection. The kidney weight to body weight ratio, kidney water content and extracellular space also were increased. A significant increase in the uptake of p -aminohippurate by renal cortical slices was observed 24 hours after injection of 5 mg/kg of potassium dichromate. Addition of 10-4 M potassium dichromate in vitro stimulated N-methylnicotinamide uptake by renal cortical slices, while p -aminohippurate uptake, gluconeogenesis and oxygen consumption were inhibited. Blood urea nitrogen levels were elevated 24 hours after administration of 25 mg/kg of potassium dichromate, while gluconeogenesis by kidney slices was inhibited and α-aminoisobutyric acid transport was unchanged. Mercuric chloride (2.5 or 5 mg/kg) did not alter either p -aminohippurate or N-methylnicotinamide transport by renal cortical slices when measured 24 hours after injection and inhibited transport at 72 hours after injection. The results suggest that injection of potassium dichromate stimulates renal organic base transport by interacting with specific transport receptors in the pars convoluta, and that organic acid transport is also enhanced under certain conditions.

Abstract: Golgi impregnation of nerve tissue can be obtained by soaking the tissue in a solution of potassium dichromate followed by a solution of mercurous or mercuric nitrate. The precipitate formed in each of these two methods has been identified. Samples of impregnated tissues were ground and examined with X-ray powder diffraction and the patterns of spacings compared both with the values of international tables (the ASTM index) and with the results of X-ray studies of substances prepared by ourselves and subjected to quantitative chemical analysis. It was found that impregnated blocks contained mercurous chromate, Hg2CrO4, after mercurous nitrate treatment, and mercuric oxide chromate, Hg3O2CrO4, after mercuric nitrate treatment. Selected area electron diffraction of ultrathin sections through impregnated nervous structures (embedded in epoxy resin) showed these to contain the substances demonstrated by X-ray analysis of whole tissue.

Abstract: A low temperature microspectrophotometer consisted of a Hitachi EPS-3T spectrophotometer and a specially designed stainless-steel low temperature box containing a microscope was constructed.The box could be evacuated and was equipped with a stainless-steel cylinder that could reserve ca 500 ml liquid nitrogen.The liquid nitrogen flows from this cylinder to a specially designed cooling stage of the microscope through a copper pipe.As the microscope a Nippon Kogaku POH polarizing microscope was used together with an Olympus MO 90 reflecting objective (90×) or a Zeiss-Jena reflecting objective (40×).Using this apparatus, visible and ultraviolet absorption spectra of crystalline barium permanganate, potassium chromate, and potassium dichromate were measured at room temperature and at low temperature (90 K).Spectra obtained at the low temperature were much better resolved than those obtained at room temperature and the lower energy band of potassium dichromate was split into two bands.Maxima of the absorption bands were shifted to the blue and their half-widths decreased, in crystals compared to those in solution and also in crystals at the low temperature compared to those at room temperature.

Abstract: In the reduction of 4-hydroxy-7-phenylazobenzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole and of 4-hydroxy-7-nitro-benzo-2,1, 3-thiadiazole with sodium hydrosulfite, 7-amino-4-hydroxybenzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole is obtained. The reduction of 4-hydroxybenzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole leads to 2,3-diaminophenol which forms 5-hydroxyquinoxaline with the bisulfite derivative of glyoxal. The oxidation of 4-hydroxy- and 4-aminobenzo-2,1,3-thiadiazoles with potassium dichromate in an acid medium has yielded 4,7-dioxo-4,7-dihydrobenzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole, which has been converted into 4,7-dihydroxybenzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole and 4,7-di(hydroxyimino)-4,7-dihydrobenzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole.

Abstract: 全鉄定量の日本工業規格JIS M 8212では3価の鉄は塩化第一スズで還元され,過剰の還元剤は塩化第二水銀で酸化される.しかしながら,この方法は水銀により排水を汚染するので公害上好ましくない.この理由から,著者らは水銀による環境汚染防止を目的として,鉄の還元剤にアルミニウムを使用する重クロム酸カリウム滴定法について検討し,還元後の溶液にタングステン酸ナトリウムを加え生成したタングステン青を消色するまで重クロム酸カリウムで滴定することによりチタンをマスキングし,続いて溶液中の鉄を重クロム酸カリウムで滴定して,JIS法にかわり製鉄原料全般に応用できる全鉄定量方法を確立した.
