Abstract: The PAS reaction in the adrenal medulla of rat, rabbit, hamster, ox, pig and sheep was investigated. The medullary cells were positive in cryostat sections and potassium dichromate fixed material but not in formaldehyde fixed paraffin sections. The latter result is due mostly to the extraction of PAS positive lipids and loss of PAS positive proteins. No glycogen was detected in the chromaffin cells histochemically. The catechol amines played no part in the PAS reaction unless the fixative contained dichromate. The connective tissue elements were also PAS positive, and the nerve fibres in ox, sheep and pig. Periodate cannot be used to differentiate between adrenaline and noradrenaline storing cells.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining content of iron in Fe-Ce intermediate alloy, belonging to the technical field of analytical chemistry. The method is characterized in that the method comprises the steps of dissolving a test sample by using hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution, determining the content of the iron through a potassium dichromate volumetric method. The method can be used for accurately and rapidly determining the content of the iron in the Fe-Ce intermediate alloy.

Abstract: To the Editor: Chromium compounds are commonly used as oxidizing agents in industrial processes and in technical-research laboratories. Oral ingestion of potassium dichromate usually leads to rapid death, regardless of immediate treatment attempts.1 Acute mucosal damage, vomiting, and diarrhea are followed by renal and hepatic failure.2 The lowest reported lethal dose is 0.1 g.3,4 We report on a 16-year-old boy in whom vomiting, diffuse abdominal pain, and acute renal and liver failure developed in January 1996, after he had ingested an unknown quantity of potassium dichromate in a suicide attempt.
