Abstract: The toxicities of seven chemicals [cadmium (Cd) chloride, potassium dichromate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, potassium chloride (KCl), Triton X-100, zinc (Zn) chloride and copper (Cu) (II) sulfate] were determined using the tropical freshwater cladoceran, Ceriodaphnia rigaudii and the temperate species, Daphnia magna. Data generated was subsequently used to determine the relative sensitivities of both species, using interspecies correlation to compare the 48 h LC50 values for both species. The 48 h LC50 values for C. rigaudii ranged from 0.002 mg L−1 (potassium dichromate) to 21.1 mg L−1 (KCl), whereas those for D. magna ranged from 0.3 mg L−1 for Cu to 418.87 mg L−1 for KCl. The LC50 values for C. rigaudii were significantly less than that for D. magna for six of the compounds tested. The interspecies correlation also showed a low, positive correlation suggesting that the sensitivities of both species were not similar for the compounds tested. Abstract: An investigation of the revelation of dislocations in potassium dichromate (KBC) crystals by etching in water, alcohls, and in inorganic acids mixes with acetone and alcohols is carried out. It is observed that several solutions including water, alcohols and organic acids produce disslocation etch pits on various faces of KBC crystals. Observations of twining and dissolution anisotorpy of (001) faces are also presented. Etching of (001) cleavage faces of same crystals in an etchant composed from 1 part HNO3 and 3 parts acetone indicates the possible growth of another phase at low temperatures.

Abstract: The photodegradation of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in aqueous solution was investigated under UV exposure and pulsed-laser irradiation. The degradation under UV exposure was studied at different pH values and with the addition of potassium chloride and potassium dichromate. The pulsed- laser degradation of PVA was investigated with a Nd : YAG laser, operating at a wavelength of 266 nm with about 6-ns pulses. The pulsed-laser degradation was studied at different polymer concentrations and light intensities. Samples were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography. The degradation rate coefficients were determined by the application of a continuous distribution model. The photodegradation rates under UV exposure were highest at extremes of pH and were greatly enhanced by the addition of potassium chloride and potassium dichromate. The pulsed-laser degradation of the polymer decreased with increasing polymer concentration, although a threshold light intensity was required to initiate the degradation process.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Oral ingestion of potassium dichromate produces a complex spectrum of complications. It has an extremely poor prognosis and usually leads to rapid death. METHODS: We report the case of a 16-year-old male patient who was admitted to hospital after oral ingestion of potassium dichromate with suicidal intention. RESULTS: The patient's condition deteriorated, and he became comatose within 5 days in spite of immediate attempts at detoxification. Because of irreversible liver failure, which occurred within 2 days after admission, and because of cerebral edema, the decision to perform a liver transplantation was made. On day 6 after admission, a compatible donor liver was transplanted. The course of liver transplantation and the patient's subsequent recovery were uneventful. CONCLUSION: The rationale for the delayed transplantation was to avoid damage of the new organ because of high serum chromium levels. Despite severe organ damage, the chromium content of the liver was increased. Abstract: Significant exposure to hexavalent chromium, a metal with broad toxicity potential in humans, has been reported. In order to understand the mechanisms of dermal toxicity induced by hexavalent chromium, global gene expression profiling of human dermal fibroblasts exposed to potassium dichromate was performed. Microarray analysis of the gene expression profile in the fibroblasts treated with potassium dichromate identified significant differential expression of approximately 1,200 transcripts compared with the control cells. Functional categorization of the differentially expressed genes identified the enrichment of genes involved in several cellular processes, including apoptosis and oxidative stress, in the fibroblasts exposed to hexavalent chromium. Induction of apoptosis and oxidative stress in the dermal fibroblasts in response to their exposure to chromium was independently confirmed by additional experiments. The potassium dichromate-induced cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and oxidative stress were significantly blocked by the addition of ferrous sulfate, an agent known for its ability to reduce chromium to the insoluble and therefore impermeable trivalent form, to the cell culture medium. Taken together, our data provide insights into the potential mechanisms underlying the dermal toxicity of hexavalent chromium and provide experimental support for the proposed protective role of ferrous sulfate in hexavalent chromium-induced toxicity.
