TL;DR: An efficient protocol of copper-catalyzed C-S bond formation between aryl halides and potassium thiocyanate leading to diaryl sulfides is reported.
Abstract: An efficient protocol of copper-catalyzed C−S bond formation between aryl halides and potassium thiocyanate leading to diaryl sulfides is reported. A variety of diaryl sulfides can be synthesized in good to excellent yields up to 94%.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that once ionic dispersion potentials are included in the theory these results can quantitatively be reinterpreted in terms of a highly specific surface pH (and a salt-independent pK(a)).
Abstract: Protein solubility in aqueous solutions depends in a complicated and not well understood way on pH, salt type, and salt concentration. Why for instance does the use of two different monovalent salts, potassium thiocyanate and potassium chloride, produce such different results? One important and previously neglected source of ion specificity is the ionic dispersion potential that acts between each ion and the protein. This attractive potential is found to be much stronger for SCN− than it is for Cl−. We present model calculations, performed within a modified ion-specific double-layer theory, that demonstrate the large effect of including these ionic dispersion potentials. The results are consistent with experiments performed on hen egg-white lysozymes and on neutral black lipid membranes. The calculated surface pH and net lysozyme charge depend strongly on the choice of anion. We demonstrate that the lysozyme net charge is larger, and the corresponding Debye length shorter, in a thiocyanate salt solution than in a chloride salt solution. Recent experiments have suggested that pKa values of histidines depend on salt concentration and on ionic species. We finally demonstrate that once ionic dispersion potentials are included in the theory these results can quantitatively be reinterpreted in terms of a highly specific surface pH (and a salt-independent pKa).

TL;DR: In this paper, the postulated routes to formation of 2-amino-4-methyl-5-arylazothiazoles (XII) from 3-thiocyanate were given.
Abstract: Methylglyoxalyl chloride arylhydrazones (III) react with an ethanolic solution of thiourea to give 2-amino-4-methyl-5-arylazothiazoles (XII) instead of the expected 2-acetyl-4-aryl-5-imino-Δ2-1,3,4-thiadiazolines (V) which were obtained from III and potassium thiocyanate. 3-Thiocyanato-2,4-pentanedione (IV) coupled with diazotized anilines to give V. The postulated routes to formation of V and XII from III are given. Nitrosation of V gave the corresponding N-nitroso derivatives (VI) which decomposed upon refluxing in dry xylene to give 2,4-disubstituted-Δ2-1,3,4-thiadiazolin-5-ones (VII). Boiling of either V or VI with hydrochloric acid gave the hydrochloride salt (VIII). The thiadiazolines V gave the respective N-acyl derivatives (IX) and (X) with acetic anhydride and benzoyl chloride in pyridine.
