Abstract: It is shown that to lowest order in an expansion in the ratio of potential energy to incident kinetic energy, the classical motion of a particle in a periodic potential is governed by the so-called string potential. Corrections to orbits calculated using such a potential are explicitly obtained in terms of these orbits.
